shifter extension Q

hey guys, i was puttin in my bodylift today, and when i got to my shifter extension box, it had no instructions in it. I installed it how i thought it would work....but...the bolt seems way too long, i know there's a right way of doing it..can anyone point me in the right direction? heres a few pics of how it looks now...and the truck is lifted already, so its tight around the rubber boot.

ummmm...... you sure you're bodylifted? You sure you don't already have an extention installed on it??? reason is that if the extention is installed BEFORE the cab gets lifted, it looks exactly as you pictured....you need to remove that plastic plate BEFORE installing the extention. When the cab is lifted and the extention is installed, the base of the shifter is in about the same spot as it is stock......just above the rubber boot on the floor.

Instructions are included in the 3" PA bodylift instructions...

those are the instructions i glanced over..still confused tho..is the plate that reads ranger/explorer front supposed to come off and the extension under it? i installed the extension by removing the cupholders...and taking off the shifter..the pictures were taking prior to lifting the body..

mkay....

Remember when your shifter was first removed and all you had was that little stub sticking out of the floor??? It'll be JUST like that after the lift w/ extention installed....just the stub sticking out the rubber hole in the plastic floor plate. In other words, to install that extention, that floor plastic thing w/ rubber needs removed, then extention installed, then put the plate back on, lastly the shifter arm gets put back on.

When I say "floor plastic thing" or "floor plate", i'm referring to the thing that the cup holders mount to that says Ranger/Explorer on it.

It's been since like Dec '08 when I last messed with an extention and I don't recall any issues with hardware and the extention. I thought the bolt in the 'kit' acted just like the stock cam bolt.....the bolt goes through and makes a positive connection. Then something to do with a cotter pin that I never installed. lol.

shane correct me if i'm wrong, but the reason you do this after, is because the bolt on question, will rip the rubber open, when it's lifted, if it's on there?

when i did mine, the instructions said to put a nylock nut on the bolt, with the nylock side facing the bolt head, threaded up most of the way, tighten the bolt into the extension, and then the nut to the extension, for the purpose of a jamb nut so the bolt doesn't thread out on it's own

let me know if the shifter clears everything properly, i can't put my shift boot back on, the bottom of my fx4 shifter just clears the plastic cup holder piece, and with the boot installed, it won't go into 1st

Weasel...

Best thing is just as i've typed out before..... remove cup holders, remove plastic floor rubber plate thing, install extention(in minimal, you could install the shift arm if wanted), leave floor rubber plate thingy off, lift cab, install floor thingy, shift arm, cup holder. Doing that extention AFTER the cab is lifted is a royal ***** and a half and I learned from the first and last one I've dealt with! lol.

Some trimming of the cupholder bezel thingy may likely be needed if you want it in the exact place as stock(ie mounted to the floor plastic rubber thingy). The added throw of the shifter caused the rubber to shove itself between the cupholder plastic and the shift arm. The last one I did, I just moved the cup holder thingy back about an inch and used new self tappers. Perfect operation and been working great for the last year and a half.

Like I said above, it has been quite some time since I toyed with a PA shift extention....I don't recall that bolt that's pictured in the OP at all. If anything, it'd be going left to right, not front to back. But I don't remember.

Ya'll need to do the cure-all of this BL humongo throw crap.....

you don't need a shorter bolt, if it's sticking out too far, it means your extension isn't properly seated on the shift knub

IDK how many times I gotta say it....

I'm gonna finish off by saying that how that shifter stub looks after BL and extention will look exactly the same as before the BL and extention install.. just a stub sticking out of the hole in the rubber.

^ no need to "sound so annoyed"...i didnt realize it was supposed to look the same as before..when i read the instructions it said:

Remove four screws (82) and transmission shift
console (83) from mounting flange (84). Pull
boot (85) up and out of way.

i assumed the shift console was the whole cupholders assembly...there was my mistake..

thanks for mentioning it should look the same as prior to installing it.
turns out that "ranger/explorer front" plate has to come off to install the extension. Hopefully this thread will help out somebody else who runs into the same problem..thanks all.

I know this is an old thread and I am hijacking it.BUT I have my 1994 Ranger XLT supercab 5 speed and I want to get a 3" body lift.... All the sites that sell the lift say you don't need the extension unless you have the Mazda..... so should I get the extensions and have it and not need it? And is the--> Ford Body Lifts - 1993-1994 Ford Ranger / Splash 2wd & 4wd - 3" Body Lift Kit - lift a good deal?
