i'm confused what should i do!!!
ok i'm posting this here because all of you drive 4 cyl
so i drive a 1996 3.0L auto 2wd ranger and right now its in the shop for the second time getting the tranny fixed... its only been two weeks since it was there the first time.
and i also have been hearing funny noises since i put on my new brake pads... but i'm not sure the rattling sounds i hear is the brakes and maybe the suspension.
so hears the deal i bought my ranger for 3k with like 120,000 miles on it and i know someone that is fixing the bumper of a 2000 S-10 that is a 4 cyl manual. this S-10 has all the options unlike my ranger. now i still owe like 2.6k left on my ranger and i can buy this S-10 for 2k.
do you guys think that for the sake of gas and that i might not have to keep fixing the S-10 unlike my ranger.
Should i sell my ranger and go to the S-10, cause i should get a ton better gas millage and not have to fix up the s-10... and i would lower my debt as a college student... really lost on this one guys cause i i'm not really set on it cause theres something about the s-10 style that i dont like... but it might be a better buy for me... and i wont have as much power as my v6....
so if u guys can give me ur opinion on what u think i should do....please say it all!

Hey man,
You shouldn't even be worrying about it because the shop should fix your transmission. The shop should make right on your transmission situation. Plus you have new rotors/pads and rims/tires and basically a brand new transmission.
MPG don't matter when you can't safely drive your vehicle and who is to say how long the motor in the S-10 or Ranger is going to last. It's all a crap shoot. Don't get tangled up in another vehicle with high miles.
However, you have already invested some money in the Ranger so you need to pay it off asap and focus on your studies.
I don't mean to lecture but cars come and go but you only get one shot at investing in yourself.

I'd say stick with the Ranger. Sounds like you've got quite a bit of repairs in it so it wouldn't make sense to drop it now. The 3.0 Rangers have a good drivetrain as long as you take care of it. The trans is the occasional weak point and now that is fixed (or better be) so why get rid of it? If you get the S-10 you're just looking at the possibility of starting all over again. As much as I'm going to get blasted on a Ford website saying this but...Chevy does make good motors. Their Vortec series 4.3 and 5.7 are damn near indestructible. They're 4 cylinders are pretty resilient as well. Basically they both would be good trucks but since you've sunk this much in repairs on the Ranger then stick with it and get your money back out of it.

The 4 banger S-10s only get like 23mpg, or at least that is what my friends have been getting. I don't know what kind of milage you're getting now, but also take into consideration that the carying capacity of a ranger is about 500lbs more than the S-10.
Not to mention, it will break down as much as yours will. I agree with the above post though, get a 4-cyl Ranger.

my ranger is a manual 4 cyl and i love it, but that doesnt mean that a manual 4 cyl s-10 will be the same way, i agree with the rest, i drive an older truck and will be starting college in the fall, and i say stick with what you have, once you replace something you're good for a while, why take the chance of buying another vehicle and making the same repairs?

well i got m truck back from the tranny shop today... seems to be working right... they replaced the tourch converter again and so i think i might have found what my "unknown" noise i was getting... it seems that my calipers keep coming loose, and the cross member that holds the tranny the bushings are old cracked and weak...so any suggestions there?
