Ranger won't start

Maybe you guys can help me out. My friend has a 95 Ranger.

It will turn over when trying to crank it, but it will not fire up. It sounds like the engine is really struggling to turn over.

What are the most common problems to look at?

I figure the plugs, or maybe a fuel problem. I really don't know. I'm not an engine guru.

Thanks.

Justin

When you say it shuts off while driving, when exactly does it shut off? when your idling? when you give it gas? when specifically does it die on you?

check your fuel pump fuse, ive had that problem before. or check your fuel filter, see if its clogged up.

under the truck, along the frame rail on the drivers side just under the cab. It looks like a small can of soda in your fuel line. Have you ever had it changed before?

There is no real nice way of checking it without gettin gas in your mouth but.....To check it, disconnect it and blow into it, if you can blow through it and air/fuel comes out the other side then the filter is good. If you blow through it and theres a lot of resistance ( not a lot of air is getting through ) or if some red/brown looking fuel comes out of it, then you need a new fuel filter. They are inexpensive, only like 12$ at Kragen. i would just suggest replacing it regardless, it will increase your MPG. :)

ya me too sometimes. it will roll over eally slow and will only start if i give it alot of gas im trying to figure it out myself. im pretty good with rangers by now but even this has me stumped. my latest idea was the ignition modual but i didnt think rangers had them dont they have a power pack anybody know. and hey if it is the fuel pump try blowing some type of carb cleaner in the intake while starting it if its that it should fie up, ive done that before.

With a high mileage engine it is common for the timing belt to strip a tooth or 5 when it is shut off.
You need to pull off the plastic cover on the front top of the engine. You'll see a flat belt about 1 inch wide going over the cam sprocket.
While one person is turning the engine over , another should watch the belt to see if it moving at all.
