Hello, everyone, I m Bryan and new here. I have an issue that maybe some one can help me with. A friend of mine has a 89 Ranger. It sat for a few years and then he drove it down from Maryland to Florida. It ran perfectly. Then all of a sudden it started to run rough and now it dumps fuel intermittently out the exhaust. He had a mechanic do a full tune up plugs wires etc, and that didn't fix the problem. Also replaced the fuel pressure regulator. Has any one had this problem in the past? With the engine running, I tool a long metal tool and stuck it on the injectors to hear for clicks. The first one doesn't click but the rest do. I am assuming that injector is not turning on. Or maybe bad. I would like to do this right and find out what code the computer is giving, and then go from there. The engine light is on, but I don't know how to scan for the code. Can some one explain how to scan for the codes...?

If it's dumping fuel out the exhaust it sounds like an injector could be stuck open

 

I agree with ranger4.0, i think it is an injector stuck open. If you have an ohm meter, check the resistance of the injectors see if that one is alot different than the others.

 

You sucked trash from the fuel tank and cloged an injector. Pull the plugs and see is the number one plug is wet.

 

Hi Guys, I replaced all the injectors and still no difference. It is still running rough, you have to hold the pedal down to keep it running, and it dumps LOTS of fuel..... I thinking the timing might have jumped a tooth. How hard is the timming chain on this engine to replace? According to the repair manual. It says you have to have a special tool to adjusted the cam sensor and to do the belt itself..

Any thoughts?

 

Changing the timing belt is VERY easy on the 2.3 the hardest part is removing the crankshaft pully it's normally stuck on there. best bet though pull the timing plug from the timing belt cover and make sure the marks line up properly. Have you checked compression and spark on each cly?

 

have spark and compression.. Funny you asked. I checked that today... Is there a special tool like the book says though?

 

Forgot to mention I think.. Its a 1989 2.3......

 

Nope i have changed many timing belts on the ford 2.3 and never needed anything special other then basic hand tools.
