K&N filter

K&N filter

So today I just switched over to having a K&N performance air filter. I know basically that theres a cleaning kit you get to clean the filter instead of replacing it, but what about oil? I've heard about oil before, is that part of the cleaning kit or something else.

Why? Did you know that the air filter for the 2.3L is the same size for the 3.0L and 4.0L V-6's? All the K&N will do is pass more dirt and oil, which will contaminate your MAF sensor, IAC valve, and throttle body.

Check this out, it's a graph of air filter area / liter of engine displacement for various vehicles. The 2.3L 4cylinder Ranger had more air filter area then a MB S600 V-12!!!!

to answere you question yes the oil comes with the kit

just dont over oil the filter and you will be fine

The kit will last you a long time. I've been running K&N filters for a long time without a single problem.

Thanks for the helpful information, maybe I should've stated that I have a 97' ranger, not a 2005...So in that case, the air filters are not the same size, if i'm not mistaken the 3.0L and up has the drop in type, and mine is the conical.

No, the stock filter is the same for the 1997 2.3L, 3.0L, and 4.0L....Motorcraft FA1616

Surface area of the filter has NOTHING to do with the rate of flow through the filter fibers! It's a proven fact that the K&N flows more air into your engine. Just don't get carried away with the oil and you'll be fine!

I was comparing area of OEM paper filters on different vehicles, which you can do a direct comparison. Do to the size of the OEM paper filter in the 2.3L 4 cylinder, the K&N won't flow any more than the OEM paper filter will flow, just more dirt & oil.

It's a proven fact that the K&N flows more air into your engine

Where do you see this besides on the K&N website?

Here is a truly independent dyno test of a K&N filter on a 3.0L....the K&N
made ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE!!:

Try to understand this concept:

1) The 2.3L engine will pull 375CFM of air at WOT, and 6000RPM
2) A clean OEM paper filter will flow 600CFM of air
3) A "NEW" K&N filter will 700CFM of air

If both the OEM paper filter, and the K&N filter will flow >>375CFM of air, there will not be an increase with the K&N.

So, save your MAF sensor, IAC valve, throttle body, and your wallet, stay with the OEM paper filter!!
