Starting Problems

I have a 1987 Ranger with the 2.9l V6. Over the last few months occasionally when I try to start the vehicle something gets stuck in the starter system. The vehicle starts but the starter stays engaged and cranking. I can shut off the ignition with the key but the starter just keeps on cranking, if i turn the key back on and off nothing changes, the starter just keeps on cranking. The only way I can get it to stop is to disconnect the battery cable. I changed the fender mounted starter solonoid and thought that fixed it but it has done it again now. Also just yesterday it did something new. It started up just fine but after I shut it down and tried to start it again all the lights came on like normal but nothing happened when i turned the key, no click, no light dimming, just nothing. Push started it and now it is starting normal again. Any thoughts on this??

My 92 ranger 3.0 had starting issues with a new battery, fender relay, and new starter. I took it , the new starter back to the parts store and it tested bad ,got a new one and it worked . have all starters tested before you put them on . My brother went through 4 before he got a good one. hope this helps.
