How Universal are o2 Sensors?
How universal are O2 sensors between various rangers? I keep getting a check engine code on the Bank 1 downstream O2 sensor. The sensors are anywhere from $30 to over $100 new. I just don't have the extra money right now. I wen't to a salvage yard today to pull one but the list of Rangers they printed off were anywhere from 1992 to 2005 with engine sizes all over the place.
My Ranger has the V6 3.0 Vulcan engine.
The salvage yard said they had no data in their computer systems as to what O2 sensors were compatible with my truck.
I'm also fairly certain I can use sensors from Ford Explorers near my Rangers production year as long as they also have the V6 3.0 engine. I replaced my radiator earlier this year with a salvage yard radiator from a 1998 Ford Explorer.
The salvage yard only wants $5 for an O2 sensor. The sensor is really easy to get to so I'm willing to pull it and use it because if the sensor is bad I can take it right back and get another one. The salvage yard is also only about 4 miles from me so it's not a problem for the extra drive time if need be.
