Hey guys i have a 1998 3.0 gas Ranger that the fuel pressure dampener went out on. i had a 3.0 flex fuel motor laying around so i threw that fuel rail on my truck and it seems to work okay. If i drive the truck then shut it then come back out 20 minutes later it cranks for a long time then will start. If the truck sits over night and i go to start it, it fires right up. Any ideas? anything will help

Looked for a new pressure dampener but mine truck is from 5/98 and every parts store has a different style dampener but not the one i need.

Flex fuel injectors are larger than gas only, they might cause a code to show up after a while.

1998 was first year of Returnless fuel system on Rangers, they run at 65psi pressure, damper prevents pressure waves from building up in the rail.

1997 and older used fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail and 35psi pressure.

I assume flex fuel was 1998 or newer.

After 20min, try pushing gas pedal to the floor and holding it down all the way, then try to start engine, it shouldn't start, injectors will be off.

If it does start then you have fuel leaking in to manifold, just after shutdown, and it is flooding engine.

If it doesn't start, then turn key on and off 4 times, and then try to start engine, if it starts then you are losing fuel pressure when it sits.
Not sure why it would start the next morning if this were the case

 

I swapped the fuel injectors when i swapped fuel rails

If i have fuel leaking into the manifold how would you fix that, would it be a leaking injector?

I will do what you said to do and i will post what happens later after im done at work!

On a 1998 and up leaking fuel could be from Pulse Damper's Vacuum hose, pull it off and check it for fuel.

Or a leaking injector.

To test for leaking injector:
Cold engine
Turn key on and off 4 times, then leave it on
Press gas pedal to the floor and hold it down all the way, if computer see 0 RPMs, and throttle is wide open(gas pedal to the floor) it will shut off fuel injectors
Try to start engine, hold gas pedal down all the way

It should not start, it should not even fire a little

If it does start or fire then fuel is leaking in

Turn it off
Now find the Coil pack, it will have a 4 wire connector, unplug it.
repeat above test, 4 times on and off, gas pedal to the floor
Crank engine for a 5 count, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

No spark so won't start of course.

Now pull out each spark plug, wet spark plug(s) will be from leaking injector cylinder
