check engine light on and dont know why

my check engine light came on today while on the highway and i cant figure out why.

go to autozone they will take the code problem solved

i still didnt find out my oils good did flush of antifreeze tranny fluids good dont know still

i can talk to Mr. Peters tomorrow and i might be able to get your truck in and put it on the scanner sometime.

we dont have an autozone around here.

i dont know if it is the glass pack because its been on for a while and now its throwing a code.

maybe throttle bodu sensor, mass air flo sensor or o2 sensor

Here's a solution: GET THE CODE PULLED .... that will tell you pretty much exactly what the problem is .. could be several things ...

advanced auto, autozone, and i think murray's discount auto all have code scanners.
or you could take it to a local mom and pop shop and see if they will pull it for you.

i love having my own scanner.

i just unplugged the battery for 15 put it back on and the light was out

resetting the computer on your truck will only 'mask' the problem until it comes back, possibly worse this time...you should have just gotten the code pulled...(for free)...come back to this site and let everyone know what the problem was, and then more than likely some help would have turned up

Code Reader

Hey all,

I purchased a code reader myself for $39 and it works like a charm! It's very simple model but it performs the below features.

- Reads and clears generic and manufacturer specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTC)
- Supports multiple trouble code requests
- Resets 'check engine light'
- Reviews the emission readiness status of OBD monitors
- Retrieves VIN number
- Free CD software with over 7000 diagnostic trouble codes

Anyhow I used it on my 2000 4.0 Ranger and my 97 Protege and it works perfectly. It will only work however if your car is 96 or newer but should work on all makes that are OBD II compliant. Here's the link http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=94169

you may get say a 171 and a 174 (i think) o2 sensors lean bank one and two.

does this mean your o2 sensors are bad?

autozone will sell you 150 bucks worth of sensors in a heartbeat!

moral of the story ls if you dont know what you are doing then let a pro (like me) diag it for you.
I understand that you don't always know what is wrong by just reading the code at face value but if you have any initiative to do the work and research yourself you are most likely to figure out the problem. With all due respect to honest pros like yourself, the industry is now riddled with people who cut corners and don't care about the residual effects. I used to have "Pros" fix my vehicles but it seemed like I had continuing problems each time I sent my vehicle in to be "fixed" then the final straw was laid when I took my car back in after a repair because it still wasn't working properly. I sat there and listened while the so called "Mechanic" that worked on my car lectured me that I shouldn't expect the car to work as good after the repair then it did before the part broke. I demanded a refund, I took my car home and fixed it myself and have never turned back. The internal combustion engine and all it's many and varying components is not rocket science, and if you have the determination you can figure this stuff out on your own and avoid just being another statistic of those who were screwed by a kid who took a few classes at his local Applied Technology Center. Isn't the reason for this forum to share ideas and figure out how to do things ourselves, rather than have mechanics tell us that we don't know anything and that we need to have a pro look at it? Just my own opinion.
