I used to hate imports until i owned one!! Imports are great cars in my opinion. Its just those silly kids that fix them up or paint them in 100 different colors and put fart cans on their cars that give imports a bad name. Im just sayin, if you build a motor/car right with quality parts then i have no beef regardless the make/model or year of the car. Their have been plenty of imports out there that were built RIGHT and have beaten some well known/liked domestics. I guess people only see cars as the name on the emblem and not their true potential! oh well

x3. I've never owned an "Import", but quite frankly, you can't deny that the Evos and WRX STI's are fast cars. I'm impressed any time I see videos of them. Not saying I don't love Mustangs, just saying I can appreciate different cars regardless of how they get their power.

I have the Style side. I am going to correct myself about the horsepower. Its 145 HP. I miss calculated. But seriously, no 4 cylinder car has as much power as a 3.0 Vulcan.

Bite your tounge Mike. Stock rating on my 2.3 4-banger is 143hp. The wife drives a Mazda3 with the same 2.3, except with vaiable valve timing, and hers is rated at 180hp.

Wanna race?

Want to show us where you got that 180hp rating? That has the older 2.3L and the new 2.5L isn't even rated for 170hp...

I concede. That is what the dealer told me, and I was stupid enough not to check him. 156hp. Still more than the Vulcan 3.0 was rated at. And your post, even while trying to discredit me, made my point, 4 bangers with more power than the Vulcan.
And lets not forget the other version of the 2.3 available in the Mazda3. 263hp.

How are they the same? Forged pistons, direct fuel injection, cam driven fuel pump, lower compression, etc. Not sure if they have piston oil squirters like the DSM engines. Just because they have the same displacement doesn't mean they are the same engine. If it was the same engine then you could technically get all the parts off of the Mazsdaspeed car and bolt it all onto the Ranger engine.

Unfortunately, the parts won't fit the rwd platform. But to say they are a different engine, is to say the 4.6 in the Mustang is not the same engine as the one in the Cobra. Same engine, just one is built to higher output specifications.

But, back to the original point, there are many 4 bangers out there that have higher output than the Vulcan.

The Honda 2.4L 4 found in the CR-V and the Accord is good for 166 hp.
Vulcan - 148.

Torque -
Honda - 166
Vulcan - 180

So - depending on the type of power, it's about a wash between these two engines. I personally think that torque is probably a better measure of power in how we use our trucks, but the difference between 166 and 180 is pretty slight.

I just picked this as an example because I 1.) Own one (the Honda) and 2.) They're pretty darn close.

Now that I think about it - really wish I had the Honda engine in my truck. It gets better gas mileage, runs smoother, and has higher HP and Torque (compared to the Duratec).... Though, admittedly, the torque curve is different, and the Ranger engine "feels" brawnier.

The cobra is also a DOHC engine, where as a gt 4.6L is a SOHC...

Besides, we all know the Vulcan is an outdated engine. No one here is saying its the end all be all for a ranger engine...
