I have a chirp coming from the rearend i think.

It get louder and faster with speed. Almost like a rock in the tire.

I have had the whole brake system changed just 5 months ago or so, so i dont think thats it.

Im afraid if i dont get it checked out quick itl become major. Ive driven about 200miles since i started hearing it now im really concerned.

Please help quick!

 

Jack up the back. put the truck in neutral and spin each wheel by hand. you should be able to hear it.

if not, leave it jack up, actually put it on stands, and have some run the truck while you stand behind it. just to like 20MPH.

be safe, use chalks, don't do it in the garage, don't stand in front of the truck.

 

By spining each wheel by hand i should be able to spin it fast enough to get it to make the noise. Will it possibly be harder to spin also? I know symptoms of small bearing, is it just a big freaking bearing basically?

And is this something i may able to change in a short amount of time? Or easier to pay someone?

well jacked it up 1 wheel at a time spun it..

no problem spinning..

both sides sounded the same and not the chirping sound...

i could kinda move the WHEEL but sounded just like the wheel against the drum..so i tightend the nuts again..didn't make a difference..

the play in the wheel isn't what i was seeing on wheels on the cars on youtube n such..but im sure theirs could be much more extreme than mine is at this time being mines been like this is the 3rd day now.

any other ideas? or should i just take it in right now and have someone look at it.?

 

Check your U-joints while you're down there..... and fluid level.

 

I just put both stands under it.

and ran it to about 20mph..could hear the chirping now.. was reading that some times the sounds isnt audible until there is the weight of the vehicle applied to the wheels...since it should be early stages it could be like that..

stupid question? but is there even wheel bearings in the rear axle? my father just said he thought they didn't..but he said he isn't 100% but i just want to cover all my bases to make sure im accurately pinpointing the problem..

easy way to check them out to see if their bad?

 

There are bearings in the rear axles. You have to remove your wheels and breaks, pull the clips out of the diff and slide the axles out to access the bearings.

I would actually think that sound was u-joints. It's not uncommon for them to start making squeaking or scratching sounds when they first start going. If you replace them, make sure you get the ones with the zerk fittings so you can grease them on a regular basis.

 

Basically just look at them and see if there is any wobble in the shaft at the Ujoint, if there is then they're worn.

 

i can grab the driveshaft by hand and rotate it and it rotates just A minimal amount (like around 1/4in - 3/16in) before it catches and starts turning the tires.

 

check and see if the drums are dragging
check for U-joint play
for chits change fluid
clean rear brakes
check the front hubs too

 

lol no, grab it and shake it like a baby, if it moves side to side and the Ujoint is loose then there is an issue, it is supposed to spin hahah.

 

Replace with Spicer U-joints not crappy $10 autobone ones

alright..i figured it would move a bit..but i thought if the ujoints were bad that it would move a tremendous amount. but your saying a side to side movement?

with the tires on the ground and it in gear.. theres no movement what so ever side to side or rotation..and i shook it like a troublesome redheaded step child..(where the child services when you need them.)

 

Ujoints are good, now check pumpkin fluid levels if you can, or replace the fluid with some 90w?

No, if Unjoints are bad you want grease-able joints especially if you go offroading .

 

just got home from the mechanic..

he lifted it up and started looking after a test drive..

he played with the ujoints...he said they weren't needing a replacement atm but would be nice.. so thats outa the question..

he said the wheel bearings seemed fine...

his partner grabbed and spun the front passenger side... LOUD SQUEAK LIKE NO OTHER..

brake pads are giving their HEY IM FUUUUUUUUUCKIN WEARING OUT squeaks..(pheww thank gosh)

and the rotors are needing replaced on the very bottom of the specs..

but the local auto stores dont have any rotors so i must wait till tomorrow to get my truck back =[

coulda done the change myself but its easier when it was already lifted up and tires removed lol.

Don't feel too bad, I changed my oil last week. Left the oil fill cap off, lost it, and I didn't tighten the filter tight enough. A frikin' oil change and I f*cked it all up!!! HAHAHA

As least yours was just having a hard time tracking something down.

Well i still get a loud chirp that i hear easily while in reverse. its VERY VERY quiet in forward moving gears. but in reverse its loud as shiiiiiiiit.

doesn't hinder the power of the truck..just annoying as crap

now would this possibly be something with the rear drums?

 

is its a Chirps short pause Chirps short pause Chirps short pause Chirps short pause and so on? take wheel off and drum and inspect the shoes and hardware i see this symptom and it the self adjuster. Put it in reverse and back up applying the brakes to see if this helps.
