Oil Consumption Question

I have a 2003 Ranger with 62000 miles on it. I have been using about 1 qt of oil between 3000-3200 mile oil changes. There are no known leaks, or at least I can not find any.

Do you thing this is anything to worry about?

I think that is normal for a 3.0L engine.

Hmm. i saw this over at the Ranger station. and like i said there, after a catastrophic overheat like that, the whole engine should have been rebuilt instead of just the top. an engine with 200k shouldn't even burn that much.

After crawling under the truck to clean, I found oily crap all ocer the lower bell housing and tranny pan.

Looks like a rear main seal leak. Thankfully it is under warranty.

Is it possible to have blow by anywhere else? I don't have the proper hose going from the valve cover to the sensor from the pcv for the crankcase ventilation. All I know is the past few weeks I smell burning oil and yesterday I checked the dipstick and it was bone dry. But now I have a side problem. For the time of day I checked...I needed some emergency motor oil. I had some 10w 30 synthetic. I hope this didn't make it worse!

now youre fine...you might need a new pcv valve and a new hose that should help the problem

it didn't. right now the 10w-30 and 5w-30 oils are the same because its warm out. the w in the name stands for the winter viscosity.

Well I may have jumped the gun. I now think the fluid is from a transmission pan gasket leak. Either way I am going to take it in and get it fixed. However the oil consumption is still an issue.

I took my truck to the dealership...yeah expensive to have them do diagnostics on my engine and transmission. I was told that my oil consumption was due to an EGR hose under or near the throttle body being clogged. For the life of me I can't figure out which hose that is.

I just got mine bach, and again there was no problems found. They gave me some paperwork from Ford that said less than 1qt / 1500 miles is normal. So I think I will have to just live with it, but I will not be happy about it. Asside from the consumption issue, It does run great.

I do not have an EGR system on my 3.0 Ranger. If only it were that simple.

It has 63000 miles on it. I was just quoting the Ford literature and reads as follows:

Engine Oil Usage Guidelines

* Oil usage is normally greater in the first 10000 miles of service. As mileage increases during the warranty coverage period, oil usage gennerally improves.

* Cars and light trucks in normal service should get at leasts 1500 miles/quart after 10000 miles of service. Severe service (e.g., towing, hauling, short trips, taxi, extended idling or law enforcement use) may result in greater oil usage. Diesel engines used in severe service should get at least 1000 miles/quart after 7500 miles of service.

It goes on to state that the dealership may not work on a vehicle for oil consumption issue unless a consumption test is performed. The vehicle must be brought to the dealer ANY time the engine needs oil and the dealer must add it and log the amount and mileage in a LOG by VIN#.

Since the engine runs so good, I think I will just keep an eye on it.
