a common topic on alot of forums fte/trs/and rf

~*! i would like to state that i am in no way affiliated with any of the products and me nor r/f are responsible if you harm your motor or self in doing any of these mods they are not supported by ford motor company and will void your warranty do these mods at your own risk always use proper safety learnin's *!~
(phew that was one nasty disclaimer)
for you guys with the newer ones i think 98+ its easy to get damaging power out of your 3.0 chips and programmers and such there is a slightly better power market for the newer rangers
but what about gen 2 and some gen 3's
( note some of this stuff will also work with all rangers of all motor sizes the 4.0 and 2.3/2.5's)
((further note some thing will just make your ranger run better as in lower temps longer oil life ((LONGER LASTING A4LD's!!!!))
ok so lets kick this show off with a bang
1. PORT AND POLISH
(around 200 for new gaskets and the drums and rasps and such)
(time around a day ***DO NOT RUSH***)
skill lvl (7-10 for full) (3-10 of only doing the upper and lowers)
ok so a p&p as its better known by is the act of removing material around the areas where a intake part ( upper/lower manifolds and heads meet)
this can be done with anything that is mass produced as there cast parts there not perfect like billet would be ( still billet can be imperfect to)
you go about this by taking your upper lower manifolds and heads off then clean up the mating surfaces with a gasket scraper and then some sort of degreaser a nice clean surface will make it all the easyer then your gonna lay your new gasket down using something to put in the holes and tape it in place then running a marker around where metal shows around the ports then take your dreamel can be an air tool or the real deal ( electric will work better so there is no loss in power wile going but tbh i stick with air as i like to take my time
remove the gasket and start removing the material that is marked gently run it in at least an inch to the original ports rinse lather repeat on the lower and heads
( only do the heads if you to totally sure you can do it if not take it to a shop! * will cost more but it would be better than messing up your heads)
from there put it all back together with the new gaskets ( i like to also run a small bead of red rtv when doing that)
WHAT THIS WILL DO! make the intake stroke of your combustion cycle easier on your motor creating less drag on the crank and such by making it work less and pull in more air on the intake stroke ( and exhaust stroke if you have also done the exhaust ports*)
* i would say do them if you have a set of headers on your truck but if you dont plan on adding headers also do it ( do not do if you have headers coming or are gonna get headers anytime soon as this might make them not match properly)
~*! further note 2 is about the same as this just with a different part to this costing you almost nothing if you have done the P&P !*~
2. KNIFE EDGE AND MILL DOWN ( your throttle body)
cost just hones and sanding drums 20 bucks!
time to do about an hour
skill 2-10
ok knife edge is like a port and p for the tb ( for 97 back your upper intake is your tb so this goes along them lines your gonna take your tb from the intake side ( where you can see the butterfly on 97 backs) and gonna pull of your hose and take your air tool/deamal again and knife edge that with a gradient inwards till to matches ( note make sure you dont go all that way to your butterfly )
BUT WAIT THERES MORE!!!!!!
this part is a 5-10 is skill lvl
your gonna take your tb apart removing your butterfly the reassable your butterfly assembly then take a hone or a large flat file and make it smoother on both sides ( make sure to leave enough there that its still strong and your screws can still grab ( just file it down to a little around the screws and a bit more in the center now put it all back together and your done with number 2
WHAT THIS WILL DO it will add to what number 1 did breath easy er ect ect
3. UNDERDOG PERFORMANCE PULLEY KIT
cost about 200 with shipping
skill lvl 4-10
there has already been a wright up about and a how to install on the how -to s on here go look
WHAT IT DOSE changes the ratios of the pulleys them self's making less rolling resistance ( like changing the gears in your dif)
4. ROLLER ROCKERS
COST about 300 usd
SKILL LVL uhh 4-10
ok so i just wnet with the 1.7:1's from tom morrana v6 and what ya do is remove your valve covers pull of the stock stamped rockers and bolt them on how easy is that!
WHAT THEY DO they have small roller barrings the the fulcrum and at the tip that require less power to make the work properly and they open up your valves more
5. hotter coil new wires and plugs
cost about 120-130
skill 1-10
remove the old put on the new that simple
WHAT IT WILL DO give you a stronger spark
and thats all for cheap
other than k&n drop in's and little things like that
ok so geting more life out of your 3.0
these mods will not ad any pep to your 3.0 hp wise but would be good things to do to make it last longer
well use mobil 1 5w-30!! not 10w-20 not 5w-40 not 10w-30

im not trying ot get it stickyd im not trying to say you can make a 3.0 a 300hp monster because frankly for cheap you cant i am saying that for these are proven low buck mod you can do that il add a bit of hp here and there
and ya some dont as hp it actually says some of the stuff will just make your 3.0 last longer less prone to a break down
and yes roller rocker and p&p's can both add up to 10-12 hp each you ad that to the fact that a stock 3.0 makes 145hp then you add the pulleys that can get you about 7-9 hp gain a properly indexed hotter plug will gain you a bit more hp like 1-5 then you add the fact that most people do have a good exhaust system on there trucks and
most can be chiped but not all to work better this these modifications
BUT you fact in the fact that over the years your motor as lost a good bit of hp but you could still be looking at around 30+hp gains or more if you have a good exhaus or headers already on your truck
and like i stated before most of these mod will work on any engine like the 4.0 and you can expect the same power
and tho alot of people wouldn't do this to the 3.0 because of the fact they they have a 4.0 ranger or such alot of people like there ranger or simply dont have the money to trade up or cant find a 4.0 4x4 in the year they want online or around them
then about my grammar spelling punctuation it was like 4:30 am here and i hadn't slept yet added to the fact that i dont really use punctuation

Id like to see the dyno sheet for the 10+ hp for the P&P and the rockers... most that the rockers will net you is 5-8hp...
also a good cam grind, N20, headers(ebay), Bigger TB 5.0 or escape mod, also shave some weight out of the body if you are going that way, bigger maf housing, gearing, sticky dr's, good race tune. separately those are under $400
I can keep up with a 4.0 until 5th the he begins to inch a way but by the time he starts passing me we have already gone a full mile... thats me with my 93 race tune and less than a 4th of a tank... but I agree once a slow 3 liter always a slow 3 liter.... common Romeo Niche I need ya badly lol

n20 yes there is more but if you look it says i am giving a general run down on what to do! not goin step by step and ya i know it will put you at around the power of a 4.0 maybe it really depends and yes there is more you can do to make more power

Thanks for the tips. Ignore the nay sayers. These things work. I'm glad someone else out there believes a little elbow grease can make power, not just a big wallet. Hot rodding is all about seeing what you can do with a motor, not just about building the biggest baddest one around. I'll gladly race a 4.0 with my 4-banger.

I know the 3.0 can be made to bust 4.0 a$$ because I've done it.
As far as DD goes.My 05 has 82,000+ miles on it and I drive it hard everyday.
I know it's over $400 but headers are a great mod to go with the others you listed.

Excellent post! Any idiot can see when they go to remove their valve covers there is a bunch of stuff in the way. (I am not calling anyone an idiot).
I enjoyed the post. It deserves to be a sticky. I may try some of these. I have a daily driver and don't want mods that cause the truck to be fussy. It just runs great and i do not want to spend all day diagnosing and tuning because some mod screwed things up. A few mods that improve are fine though. Whenever anything goes, I try to put in an upgrade.

and i will report my findings in ..... 3000 miles to see how they stack to mobil 1
