Personally, I feel that choosing one muffler to the next based on horse power is pointless. Getting the sound you want is worth much more in fun than the difference in a horse power or two. Just my opinion. With that said I prefer flowmaster. I run the 50 series and actually think it sounds really good. Not loud and obnoxious like "ricer" muffler mods. Moderate deep tone that doesn't gurgle or pop when you let off the accelerator.

IMO..Stay away from Slowmasters...get the Borla.

Umm...yea...Slowmasters...they produce NO significant gains on the dyno and sometimes restrict flow. 1-2mpg can be attributed to a number of things-weather, driving habit, type of gas, different routes, etc. The thing that helped you the most was the 2.5 inch piping, not the muffler.

Let me put it to you this way...had a guy base line his 2004 GT, then put dropped some Flowmasters in, and lost 1whp. Went back the next week with a SLP LMII CB and picked up around 9-10whp. This is mostly attributed to the full 2.5 inch pipe and a thru style muffler. Also, temps and humidity were pretty close IIRC. Flowmasters are a waste of money unless you like the nasty sound they make...other then that, they are really good for no HP gains.

But I like my girgle girgle pop pop...
People are entitled to their opinions...me...I've never and will never own anything that doesn't have a 'slowmaster' on it. Ranger has had 6 mufflers on it....Magnaflow and Dynomax ultra flo were both similar straight thrus which gave the best numbers on the 'seat of your pants' meter. But I prefer the Flow over them all. And a flow with tailpipes, at least on a Ranger, is right up there with a borla (puke sounding) or a magnaflow(also puke sounding) as far as performance wise. My point....application has alot to do with it. OP sounds like he's gonna be running stock pipes...shiZ....he'll be choking the thing so what muffler he runs doesn't matter.
*were those flowmasters 'broke in' for that dyno run???? I'm sure you know this, but mufflers sound and perform differently 500miles after install...

I think that comparing a Mustang cat-back exhaust system to a ranger exhaust system are like apples and oranges. For one your talking about different size motor's, pipe sizes, a true duel exhaust vs a single. So you really can't compare the two. Obviously people have a tuned ear to what they want. I've had Dynomax, Borla, and Flowmaster. Sound wise my flowmaster blows the other two out of the water ..IN MY OPINION. Power wise....it's a toss up between Flow's and the Borla. And yes that's "seat of the pants judgement."
Flowmaster's making less power than stock oem exhaust? LOL I don't believe that. If that's the case I wanna see a dyno sheet. My 93 Fox I had was a totally different car with flows on it vs the stock exhaust. Borla is an overprice muffler. On some car's they do really well, on other's (the ranger) didn't score to good on my opinion. Again your entitled to your opinion, but I think you statement about flow's not producing anything or making it worse, is pretty far fetched. Just my opinion...

As far as saying they produced the most power, seat of the pants wise, there is no way you would be able to feel a difference...especially if all of the stock cats are in, being those are what restricts the most flow and HP. Sure it is louder and makes you seem like you are faster, but that is not the case.
BUT...OP get what you think sounds good...you won't feel any difference anyways, so whatever you like is the way to go.

My cousin put a Flowmaster on his 4.0 mustang. The car was noticeably more sluggish. It sounded great, but it took him less than a week to put the stocker back on. After the stock muffler was back on, the car was again noticeably more peppy than with the Flowmaster.
Don't tell me thats apples and oranges. If you want sound get a Flowmaster. If you want performance get a Borla.
If you want stock quietness with performance, maybe try a Mustang muffler and be a guinea pig for us.

I just put a "slowmaster" 10 series on my 4.0 and I have a noticeable gain, but then again I went to 2.5"pipe after the cats. Now my roomate put a flow 40 on his '03 f-150 with the 5.4., other than the muffler everything is stock and his truck had some gains, however small the gain was there.
