Exhaust on the cheap...

Let me start off by saying, I know very little about how an engine runs. What I do know is that my stock exhaust is not very manly sounding. I would like a deeper tone exhaust, however not so much that it is annoying to drive.

Anyway, for my desires, I though Magnaflow would be a good choice. Up here in Canada it seems the cat back systems cost around $600.00, while just the muffler costs about $100.

Why can't you just buy the muffler and then have some shop make you some pipes and weld it all together??? Is there something I'm missing? Wouldn't this be cheaper??

Yes, you can just buy a muffler and have a shop weld it in. If you don't want to spend too much money, you can just have them weld in flowmaster or a muffler of your choice in place of your stock one, using your stock tail pipe. If your willing to spend more, then you can get a new bigger single or dual tail pipes ran.

well most places that you go to wont install parts that u bought. they are gonna try and get the most money out of your business as possible. the reason for a whole cat back is it was designed with certain sized pipes and angles for the best performance. if u go with the cat back youd be able to put it on yourself with lil headaches like trying to find a shop that will install your muffler.

What Mike Jones said. get a offset in/center out muffler and it should work perfectly fine with your stock pipes. 2" in/2" out as well. Sorta a "stealthy" set up.

My local shop will install a muffler that I bring in with no problems. Depends on the shop... there is no reason to spend 600plus dollers on a catback. A custom exhaust shop should be able to bend you a whole catback system for far less than a prefabbed one. Just go to a good shop that uses good pipe and smooth bends like my local shop. Depending on the tips you get, that can add alittle to the cost. I got stainless ones because I only want to get them once.

I had my first cat back done for under 250....muffler was 50, tip was 50, bend and hanging/welding was 150.

Yeah that sounds about right, I have no muffler, but for the cost of the Y pipe made, and bending/hanging/welding, and stainless tips, it was still like 3xx something, not too bad IMO. Thats duals.. It wouldent have been much more with a muffler.

I would think that a professional muffler shop wouldn't have too much trouble creating and installing such a system. I guess I should do some checking around in my area.

I'd be happy to do a custom Magnaflow catback system for $500 cdn.

today i bought a cherry bomb muffler and used an adapter and u bolts to bolt it in place. I just dumped it right after the muffler. might add a turndown tip later. all in all it cost me a little under 30 bucks. im happy with it :)

Ok so if I buy a muffler (say magnaflow) and a stainless tip, then just get the shop to install it, or should i get new pipes from the cat to the muffler and the muffler to the tip? what size pipes are standard?

I am pretty sure that 2 inch pipes are stock, so i would go with those.

I have dual 2" 1/4, and that would be good for single as well.

in canada also, quoted $380 for a magnaflow muffler, with 2.5" piping... cat back... your quote of $600 is retarded.

Shop around.

That sounds about right. i dont understand why anyone would buy a pre fabed cat back "system" from Borla, magnaflow etc for $550+. It makes no sense.

I got my exhaust done for $160. that was 2.5" piping from the cat bat, mandrel bent piping, and a cherry bomb muffler. It cost a bit more for different mufflers but not more than $200 for it. So I say have them do it.

Thanks for all the great replies!!! I am going to visit a couple local shops and see what they can do for me. I don't know if they are open today or not (civic holiday) But I will get a few quotes in the next few days.

I was going to buy some tires in about a month, but I may do the exhaust first and see how the goodyears handle in the winter. (By then I will have enough for new tires anyway.)

For your 3.0L, i'd do single 2.25". If dual, 2.25" in/2" dual out.

i got my catback with glasspack and duals for 225 that for the pipes bends welds glasspack and tips

btw you will also save abit by getting a dynomax muffler... but i hear they dont last as long as a magnaflow

like said earlier, check with your local shops. All my local shops, except one, will install a muff/tips the customer purchased elsewhere. well...that one shop wanted to charge me $450 if i bought the muff somewhere else. jeeeze. (FLOWMASTER FTW!!)

I have dual 2.25", with 3.5" tips, and I love it. Makes for a deeper sound, and 2.25" still isnt that big, but a nice size.

Or go extra cheap, get a muffler with a 2" in and 3" out and put a turn down on the muffler exit and an exhaust clamp for the entrance.

never seen a 2" in/3" out......


like this? You can do this using stock piping, two band clamps, a turndown, and a $2 hanger.
