Ive got a taurus 2-speed fan I got from a member here. I bought it as a "good" unit from him but the motor took a **** as soon as I hooked power to it...no biggie. I went to AutoZone, got a replacement motor with lifetime warranty for $60ish. I then made something like this to thread in a temp switch to control the LOW speed on the fan.
That switch is controlled by a on-off-on toggle that powers (2) 80A relays. 1 relay is activated by the temp switch and the other directly by the toggle to power up the HI speed on the fan. Ive been running my setup for a year now and havent had any issues with overheating...hardly use the HI speed unless Im idling for long times in 110F heat but even then I didnt need to run it on HI.

do yourself a favor and google "taurus fan install." Do some reading and come back with questions.

A 1 speed can work, but you need a big fan, not a lil 10" one. If you're trying to do this as cheap as possible, you might end up overheating your truck.

If your going to order a new one from ( Flex-a-lite) or whoever, get somewhere above 2500 cfm's. So thats the 15" to 16" fans, or the taurus fan , or any bmw or mercedes or lincoln mk8...I'm running 3300 cfm (they claim) in a 4.0 Jeep and not having any issues with it, and thats without the factory shroud attached. Should be using it, just havn't felt like putting it back on since my little water incident.

There is no magic cutoff line for the CFM amount and the ratings are all over the board. There is not standard on how to measure CFM so every manufacturer measures different, so use it as a guide not gospel. 3,000 CFM is plenty to cool your 3.0, I am using less CFM to cool my 5.0. The taurus e-fan is widely suggested because they can be found for cheap in the junkyard and put out alot of air flow. If you don't want to wire a 2-speed then don't. Get a single speed fan from summit. If it was my truck I would put on the largest fan I could fit on your current radiator. A 16" fan will be plenty. Set it up to pull the air through the radiator rather than push if you can, it is more efficient that way. As for shroud they help pull the air through a larger portion of the radiator than just a fan, but they are not mandatory to run. I have never run a shroud with my electric fans.

just get a taurus fan and only wire up the HI speed. Most aftermarket fans dont have replacement motors, the taurus fan does and AutoZone has a lifetime warranty on them, REALLY hard to beat. Its a proven setup, can get parts cheap and will probably last longer than other non-oem fans.
