14 mpg is a record

on my hunt for what the issue is on my terrible gas-here is what i found

ticking under my hood
push down on number one spark plug boot and the tick disappears but also gives me a real nice shock. no noticeable change in how the engine runs when i push down on it just the ticking stops. bad boot i assume-will be replacing

i originally thought maybe it was a bad maf
so when i unplugged nothing really changes- idle seems like it goes down a lil to normal then back up a little maybe
plug back in-car almost seems like tis gonna die but then smooths out.

thoughts?

Sounds like that thing needs a full tune up. Plugs, wires, o2 sensors etc...

Where does the ticking sound come from? I just had my plugs&wires changed and it started making a ticking sound around the plugs but I couldn't pinpoint it.

Sorry for the OT post but you might help solve my problem :)

i heard it and i just started pushiing on the boots to make sure there on good and when i pressed on the first one (the third from where i started) the ticked stopped, it was warmer and i could feel the pulsing with each tick. funny thing is i just cleaned the MAF today before i did the test and the coil, plugs, and wires are new. the wires i got in trade from my old mechanic-guess it wasnt a fair trade. anyone know where i can pick me up some screamin demon wires?

I haven't had a chance to mess with mine because it's getting inspected but my ticking started AFTER I got new plugs and wires put in. I went back to the mechanic(good family friend) and he said the ticking was happening when they pulled it in the garage yet I have NEVER heard that sound until after.

So until I figure it out it's up in the air.

you shouldn't ever need to replace your 02 sensor if it doesn't go bad, then it would throw a code. no code = good o2 sensor.

ok good one less thing to worry about. If you pick up a new maf, do you have to have say ford program it or is it good to go out of box?

This is correct. And modern spark plugs are all pre gaped. If they are platinum/iridium tipped by gaping them you can damage the tips of the spark plug. if there not smashed closed then i would just put them in as is.

Be very careful and try to not touch the tips if you look close it just looks like a single grain of sand or somthing just dont touch that.

i have a tick in my 93 4.0L the guy i bought it from said he had just replaced the wires, which he showed reciept well when he did that he didnt replace plugs which idk why it was like 20more bucks but after looking over his work i noticed he had crossed wires and wrapped them around each other so i changed plugs and redid the wires and now its fine so maybe make sure your wires arent crossed, but im sure you already did that :)

when you say crossed, your saying from the coil to the plug two wires cross over like braided form?

o2 sensors are only good for about 60-75k miles. They CAN go bad and not throw a code. I've had bad o2's before that were not throwing codes but were getting 'lazy' and were telling the computer to dump way more fuel than necessary. My mileage was crap and as soon as I changed the o2 sensors my mileage came back
