Might wanna revisit what I suggested about verifying that the CEL is even functioning. If it isn't, check the bulb as that's the first obvious problem. After that, clear codes and go for a drive. When the CEL comes on, come home and pull the codes (it costs $0.00 to do this), and post them, making note on the DTC #, and the condition KOEO, KOER, and/or CM.
I had your exact some problem on my old 94 with a 4.0, fell flat on it's face beginning when it was slightly warmed up and was MOL undriveable; instead of guessing what it might be, throwing parts and money at it blindly and wasting time I didn't have to waste I got right to the point. I pulled the DTC's and used the diagnostic flow charts on an Alldata CD I have, the same charts that Ford and other experienced professionals use in their service bays. Took about half an hour to diagnosis it, not counting a parts run and wait for the part. The solution to the problem was far from what I would have ever
