High Pitched Whine When Accelerating...

Hi guys,

Been having some odd issues with my ford lately and I want to make sure it's not something big. I heard from Alon that this is normal with our rangers and to ignore it but lately this whineing noise coming from my truck is getting louder and more annoying

Basically when I start accelerating this whine starts and gets louder the more rpm's I go. It also goes with my shifts, so it will whine all loud right before a shift then hit 2nd and the sound will start from the beginning again and get louder towards the next shift.

Any ideas? Fuel Filter? I just changed it less then 15k miles ago so I don't think it's that...

lol I think strider's talking about revs coming through tweeters.

but.......pop your hood, remove the tb cover, rev it and listen....or have a friend rev it while you listen.

a better description of the sound of the general area where it's coming from would be helpful.

LOL my CB will buzz when I get up past about 3000 rpms with my revs

I dunno, are you talking about the low pitch whine when you start out sounding like it's coming from the middle to rear of the truck?

Travis -- I will have my buddy rev while I listen and get back to you with my findings.

Chuck -- Truthfully it sounds like it's comming from somewhere under the hood but I could be wrong. My hearing is kinda f'd from blasting my music so loud all these years, but I think it's comming from the front. Could be the middle though no doubt.

The whine I had was from my cat.
Got to the end of the driveway and popped the hood and out she came , not too much worse for the wear. She doesn't crawl up in there anymore.

if it is coming from the speakers then it sounds like your ground wires.

When I did my ipod connections I was getting wine from the ipod. I figured out that the new power outlet that I had installed to power the ipod, well the ground wasn't good enough tapped into the stock system. Ran a new ground wire to the frame and all was good

It doesn't sound like its comming from my speakers though, I can turn my head unit completely off and it will still make a high pitched noise when accelerating.

grrr :(

Put a voltmeter on your battery with the truck off .Note the voltage.
Start the truck, let it run for a few minuites and measure the voltage again.
If it's over ~14.5 the alternator is constantly charging and can produce a whine.
Have you also checked the power steering fluid ?

Power steering fluid is good, it's not sounding like a whine that has to do with steering. It whines when I go straight lol.

I'll check the volts but if my alternator is constantly charging will that cause it to go out quicker or would that be a good diagnoses of it going bad anytime soon? If so, I'm getting that crap replaced, I've been stranded a couple times with dead alts and it's no fun.

If it's charging all the time even after the battery is full , it can overcharge the battery which will boil it dry and cause it to explode.Makes quite a mess under the hood.
Run on down to the auto parts store and grab a mechanics stethoscope. They're great for pinpointing strange noises.Touch the probe end to a fuel injector and you can hear it clacking away inside.

^ bump

any resolution on this prerunner?

ive encountered an intermittent whine problem the last couple of weeks and am doing some forum searching to try and find a solution.

mine is most noticeable around 25 mph and 45 mph, right before shifts, under light acceleration. if i let off the gas the whine goes away - or if i press harder on the gas it goes away.

im going to double check my fluid levels tonight but would be interested to know if this was your alternator or rear axle or other.

thanks!
