yeah new engine time, probably spun a bearing, sometimes when you spin a bearing, which is done by either beating the **** out of the engine, or the oil pump failing, anyways when you spin a main bearing the friction bearings usually wedge them selves under neath between each other and lock up the engine, pretty much ruins it, the cradle is scored the journey the spun bearing was running on on the crank shaft and scores the block

ok how about we start with the common sense things
1. Remove the serpentine belt and crank
2. Remove the spark plugs and crank
3. Remove the cam Synchronizer and crank
4. Remove the transmission and turn by hand
5. remove the heads and turn by hand
Instead of jumping to the "put a 5.0 in it 3.0's suck" why doesnt someone actually try to help? If you want a V8 put one in your truck...maybe this dude just wants to drive it [/rant]

yeah you can always take a 1/2 inch drive take the belt off and try to turn the crank with the transmission in neutral, i believe its a 22mm socket, when it locked up what happened, and if the oil pump quit then the gauge most likely woulda dropped, and yeah removing the transmission is a great idea, its possible that that is what locked up not the engine, if the trans locks up then the engine will stall

I'm going to assume that you directed that towards me. 3.0's DO SUCK. and note, I said 4.0 first. then added 5.0, because most people would jump in and say "5.0!!!!!!!!!!!!" right away. so instead of just throwing it out there first, I put a more reasonable option first. I got a whole whoppin 70 miles out of my spun rod bearing till it blew a huge hole in my oil pan. but, I had no intentions of rebuilding that motor from the start.

It wasnt directed just at you....its a very common thing people say to everyone around here...of course everyone would like 5.0 in their ranger but some just want to drive them.
I would have loved to have a 5.0 in my ranger, and im more than capable of doing so, but as my daily driver, it served me well with 202k on it, no oil consumption and 20 mpg...now i have a very thirsty 5.4...the motor i would have liked to put in my ranger is in my fairmont now so its all good
