Will not engage into 4wd-2001

I have a 2001 Ford Ranger xlt. 3.0 v6. 220,000 miles
The Problem is my 4wd will not engage and the 4wd little icon wont appear either.
Does anyone have an idea what might be the problem?
Also, I was wondering how do the used car dealers clean their engines so they basically look brand new?

Thanks

When i click it over to 4hi or 4lo, i do not hear anything like anything is trying to work. What is really weird is one random day it did click into 4hi. That was just one day though.
How do you clean the engine though? i am not to mechanically inclined :(

Get under the truck after you have put it in 4hi and tap on the transfer case with a hammer. If that doesn't work then it is more then likely your shifter motor. It is a common problem on these trucks. If it does work it means that it is on the way out and is selective about when it wants to work.

I know this is a stupid question, but where is the transfer case located about?

Right behind the transmission and before the driveshaft. It's kinda oval in shape and will come towards the driver side of the truck. On that is the motor. That looks like a small can.
