Error code P0176 - 2000 Ranger

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to help my brother-in-law diagnose his 2000 4WD 3.0 liter Ranger with flex fuel. I pulled out 4 codes the other day, one of which was P0176 Flex Fuel Sensor.

Does anyone know the procedure for checking this sensor and associated wiring? What resistances or voltages should I be getting when I check them. Any diagrams related to the checking procedure are greatly appreciated.

Also, if it is found that the sensor is bad, does anyone know where to get a cheap one? It appears the sensor is between $600-700. I found a company that lets you "bypass" the sensor and fool the computer Flex Fuel Sensor Replicator for a Ford

Has anyone used this product? Has anyone made their own? I don't think it would be too hard.

It seems like unplugging the sensor will just make the truck randomly shut off which is not good.

Thanks for the help!

also I forgot to ask, will a bad flex fuel sensor or wiring cause the truck not to start or run at all? I've read where it will cause the motor to cut out or stall but it seems like those people were able to get it restarted right away.

Oh and he is running 87 Octane and not E85.
