The IAC was new to me too. It is an aluminum cylinder about 1.5" in diameter and about 3" long and is just behind the throttle plate on the intake manifold. It gets carboned up and can cause rough idle or the engine to die when you start to take off at a stop. You can clean it yourself if your mechanically inclined. A shop can do it for you. If that don't work you will have to replace it.
How long has it been since the spark plugs were changed? Check for bad plugs or plug wires or vacuum leak first. There are several things that can cause rough idle but it does sound like the IAC valve.
I just cleaned the IAC on my 2003 Ranger and it is right on top of the maniflod just behind the throttle body assy. It was a little carboned up and easy to clean.
