1987 2.9L - Gas Leak/Evap Canister

Hey guys. I've been using this site for a while to help me out with a few issues I've had in the past. This is my first official time posting, and I appreciate any advice in advance.

Here's what's going on: I hopped in my truck to go home after work and it started and idled normally. As I pressed on the accelerator, the engine shuddered and tried to die on me. Eventually, my brother and I towed it back to my house. I idled the truck as it was being towed so I could use power steering/breaks. When we got to the house, we noticed gas leaking out of the front (in good quantity), onto the street. Quickly, we rushed and opened the hood to find that the fuel was coming out of the Evaporation (Vapor) Canister. My brother released the pressure in the fuel system, and noted that there was hardly any pressure to begin with. We plugged one of the lines with a screwdriver, and removed the canister, for it was completely full of gas. My brother suggested that it might be a Purge Valve failure, but I'm not so sure. I'm not extremely experienced, but my Ranger has served as a great learning tool :)

Some things to note: I did not overfill the gas tank(s) (mine has two). The fuel filter does need to be changed after all these years. Unfortunately this model looks to have been built on top of the filter, so I need to reroute the whole shoot n' match.

Ranger Specs:
1987 Ford Ranger XLT 2.9L V-6 4wd Auto.
