oil light

I was driving my ranger on the high way doing bout 80.when the oil light came on. .I pulled over to check the oil n it was a little low I then out some oil but the light never went away .
As I was driving it home it started making a sort of clacking sound bu more.as if air was escaping from a gasket while the oil light is still on.
Does anybody have anyidea wat it could be

sounds like you drove your engine with no oil pressure and you toasted the motor..that idiot light on the dash means that the engine is making insufficient oil pressure and if you keep driving it with that light on you can kiss the engine good bye...just like you did to yours

If oil pump quit, you were running with no oil flow hence clacking sound and toasted engine.

Oil In sump is fine but it wasnt travelling through your engine, hence major damage.

I don't no if I agree, I have a 93 ranger with a 3.0 and my oil light comes on. I checked it and was a quart low, added a quart light went out, it then did it a couple of more times (months apart) and again I was a quart low. ford tech. told me this is a factory normal.
