How much can the motor handle?

How much can the motor handle?
I am just brainstorming what I could potentially do with my truck performance wise in the future. I'm attempting to learn more about engines in general, not just the 3.0 vulcan.
My questions are:
(please excuse my young minded questions)
-How much can the truck take as it sits in my driveway (horsepower) with stock transmission and engine internals? (50k on the truck)
-What is the fastest 3.0 Ford Ranger (HP) that you have ever seen or heard of?
-If I was to fabricate a turbocharger system, how much money would be involved to achieve 350 or higher horsepower?
-I understand that the stock engine internals, heads, entire intake system and transmission would have to be replaced. But how much would doing all of this cost? (just a very rough estimate)
-Has anyone that you know of bored out a 3.0 to a higher displacement?
Thanks in advance for helping me learn more about my truck. I would have guessed that to fully build the transmission, build the motor and turbo charge it, I would be spending somewhere around 8-10k. I am only 16, and I am trying to get an idea of what is attainable. I am sure i will have plenty more q's in the future also.

A couple of questions to ponder. Why focus on a HP number? Bragging rights that mean nothing? 350 seems so random. Sorry to hit you with this but it seems to be the goal for your generation. I focus on 1/4 mile times in my goals. Easily proven if you have a track nearby.
The reason I bring this point, is there is more than one way to go fast. HP is just a part of it. I have an s-10 with a 4.3 that ran 13.01 in the 1.4 mile. It's as close to a 12 second truck as you will find. Weight transfer (traction) and weight reduction were as important as HP.
I saw this nice Mustang Cobra with 500 rear wheel hp at the track. He had just got the new supercharger on and dyno tuned it. His first run turned into a right turn into the wall. It was pretty sad. He didn't work on the "package", just the HP. Too much for the wheels to grip.

-440volt.. his truck is on blocks presently.
-Doug904.. blew teh heads, hasnt had time to really tinker with it.
-BlackTremor02.. wound up removing it after the engine went. He moved up to NY.
-The other 2.. one burned a piston, the other tossed a rod THROUGH the block.
A guy named Derrik toyed with Nitrous.. He actually caught a ( basically ) STOCK 4.0 that a guy named Coy on here owned.
He wound up grenading his engine as well, then bought a fox mustang.

Heres a low-ball guess.. 5 grand. Thats doing it teh RIGHT way and not some bonehead in their back yard mig-welding old bed-rails to make an exhaust.

I've spent a LOT of money building the engine that is presently in my truck and its a 4.0 . The rods/pistons ran me almost a grand alone. Its going to be an expensive paperweight by spring.
On a GOOD or ' Outstandingn ' achievement, you MIGHT be able to squeeze 300lb/ft out of a vulcan engine. That will be an EXPENSIVE project and the longevity of all your cash and work.. will be questioned.
Find/aquire a rolled Exploder from 98-2003 ( 2002? ) that have a 302 in it ans rape it. It will have everything you nneed from the factory. You could aquire such for under 2 grand. The aftermarket and ' power ' items for a 5.0/302.. its wide open.

If you want eye candy under the hood, as well as HP, I would search for a used Whipple kit. Its a supercharger that was made for 3.0 Rangers. They were $2500 - $2900 new. It sits on top of the engine and you know it's there. I'm not sure what year your ranger is, the whipple did not fit all years.

If you want something custome but still has some nice eye candy check out about making a rear mounted turbo system. Then take your engine and get forged piston and connecting rods and probably a new crank, then you can have everything balanced and blue printed. Then you need to work on your transmission. Now I dont know exactly what you can do but check out advancedadapters.com and see if they haev a convertion to put a C4 on it. Then an explorer 8.8 with a factory LS (Figuring you want something that is nice on the street but will lock when you step on it). You could get some traction bars or maybe do a ladder bar setup. These are just a few things that I think you could do to make it nice. And on top of that if you build the motor right you could throw like a 50-75 shot of nitrous at it every so often. I think that would be a rather bad *** ranger.

The problem with modding anything is: you have to plan out everything before and know when to stop.
the 3.0 is pretty weak stuff and you could build a junkyard 302 for half of what it would cost to build up the vulcan.
Heck, I built a stock shortblock 302 with some ported e7s and made ~280rwhp with less than $2000 in the whole motor carb to oil pan. Thats a lot more than a lot of whipple/m90 setups on here make and thats with a lot less cash involved too.
Can you swim against stream? Of course . . . but it all relies on how much you can do yourself and how much cash you have.

I agree with the guy above. I got a 302 INterceptor motor that I pulled from a police car for like $500. To bad I blew the main bearings in it when it was in my 81 Bronco
I mean if you car going to build a 3.0 you are going to drop some serious cash for not alot of power. On the otherhand your truck would be a one of a kind

Here is the best thing you can do as far as mods go, and I do know about this because I am a certified Ford Tech and service writer. Ford just recently started doing crate engines this is one of many options. I would try to get something like a 4.6 liter V8 because even if you blueprint the 302 once up and running you'd better hope that u never have to work on it because you'll have no under the hood clearance, and to get it back extensive body work required and it aint cheap. as far as turbos, camshafts and things of that nature ur pissing ur money away. Exhaust I'd go 6 inches behind the cab and that is it and use Terminator Muffler with single 3.00 in. Inlet and dual 2.50 in. outlets no tips or nothing on the muffler. Plus u MUST NOT HAVE A CAMPER TOP OR IT IS ILLEGAL IF YOU DO. As far as nos goes stay away from it. it will destroy any and all engines over certain periods of time. Turbos can and usually do Overpressurize the engine causing extensive Damage. There are no Cams and cranks and stoker kits for the 3.0. www.tommoranav6racing.com has kits but Theyre for Canadian Vehicles Only. Your better off doing a V8 swap and get alot more parts options than having none at all. For Low end performance i would switch to 4.10 rear gears which is what mine has. Once you have made this swap you'll have a nice looking sleeper truck. here are other options, Performance Chips (the price varies depending on how much power you want), go with an K&N air filter (stock replacement), the Tornado Fuelsaver works as well. I gained 4 MPG and a little but noticable power gain. Or you can just go to ur nearest salvage yard and get a 5.0 block (302 block) have it bored and stroke it to ur desired C.I.D balance and blueprint it from that point. Drop it in and switch to a tilt front end hood.

here's another thing that people don't take into account. It also has alot to do with the driver, the tires, and how it handles. Every Ranger is different. You can have a bone stock ranger like mine was at the time and smoke a cat with an SRT4 Dodge Neon Modified to the max because he didn't know how to drive it, just like I did. He wanted to race for pinks but I said no and went Old School on him and made him raise the hood. I did make him buy me a cold soda though.

Yikes, some of these replies are very scary and some are down right nonsense (Canadian Vehicles Only? WTF?). Don't let people tell you what you want, just go ahead, do the research and decide for yourself. I did the Frankencharger, the Whipplecharger and now I'm looking at a turbo-ethanol engine - not be cause one was better than the other, but because it is different.
I'm also not a big fan of horror stories, there are plenty of folks running around on Whipple who HAVEN'T greanaded their engines. I blew one set of head gaskets, but that was before we had the options we had now. Take your time, read REAL books (not forums) and go from there.
