Icon5 Pedestal mount rocker question

I've been searching and found that it's possible to bolt roller rockers on the 3.0 that are for the 5.0. You just have to use a different bolt, metric instead of the 5/16. You can pick up used 5.0 roller rockers all day for $100. Has anyone tried this yet.

This info came from the ranger station website.

Man that would be great if it is for sure accurate. Would change the whole feel of your motor. Thing is there are a lot of options so make sure you get the right ones

No new push rods needed. I'm going to experiment with this untill I get the wear pattern correct on the valve stem. I'll keep everyone posted.

What new bolt do you need for this? I believe the 3.0 and 5.0 both have a stock rocker ratio of 1.6. Here is a pic of the ones from the 5.0.

Thanks for the pic :) The 5.0 heads E7's and gt-40's use a 5/16 bolt and our 3.0 rangers use an 8mm. Just use an 8mm bolt instead, check valve stem wear, and you're good to go.

Most stock 5.0's are 1.6 but the picture shows the Crane/Ford 53ZE-6529-AB roller rockers from the 93~95 Cobra which have a 1.7 ratio.

Thanks Bob! I was told I had them when I picked up the motor, but I really didn't know!

Just remember that none of the stock rockers are roller rockers, which is one of the major benefits of the upgrade. As has been said, the 5.0L rockers are the same save for the bolt...does anyone know where you could get new Ranger rocker-arm bolts?

I don't see why you couldn't get longer ranger bolts from a hardware store. Long as they are hardened there should be no difference.

Pushrod Rangers do not have factory roller rockers but 93~95 Cobra Mustangs do.

Some have retapped the 8mm thread in the 3.0L head to accept the 5/16-18 bolts from the 5.0L pedestal rockers. If retapping doesn't appeal to you, it should be very easy to find compatible 8mm socket cap screws instead. When using the 5.0 Crane/Ford roller rockers from the Cobra Mustang, the bolt length should be about 50mm.

Pedestal rockers must be shimmed for correct lifter preload. It is good insurance to apply a light duty threadlocker on final assembly. Torque to 18 lb-ft.

Here are some links to the installation of roller rockers in 3.0L Rangers. Note that these are for stud type rockers, not pedestal style, but the procedure is similar.
