If you gut out the muffler you still have the small piping and restrictive bends of the stock exhaust. A full catback exhaust will give you some extra power don't expect to be able to light the tires up through 3rd gear or something. Its only a 3.0 Also most exhaust shops crush bend their pipes unless you find one that specifically mandrel bends them of you choose to go that route. I personally like something that is already made for the truck.

Lifted,
If your truck is a real dog like mine was, I got a big improvement by changing the cat. I also got a Dynomax cat back from Summit for $150 shipped. I hear they may be less now. It fit perfectly and came with everything. I did them both at the same time but figure the cat was the culprit. It breathes really well now. Before I could not get the rpm's up. Now they increase smoothly and easily. I had a few thousand less miles than you. The 01 may run cleaner than a 95 though. You could try one at a time because the catback bolts right in to a stock converter.
Now it runs better than when I got it at 66k.
