Icon4 Where is the fuel pump? On top of tank? **2.9 juttering problem, lil help please!!!!

So would I have to drop my whole gas tank then considering I can't find the pump anywhere easy acess like my 99' was? Guessing its above the tank, can anyone back that up before I drop it for nothing...... Gonna check to see if the filter is clogged up before I buy a new one (did find one for 42 bucks shipped to my door though!!! NEW)

When I accelerated in first and second its generally fine, but starting in third when I am accelerating it does this thing where (to my limited knowledge self) sounds like its missing on a cylinder. Like for a second it stops pushing then it will kick back in, its like a engine stuttering except while running and it does that when accelerating from 3rd to 5th. When just cruising at a constant speed on flat ground it doesn't really do anything, an occasional super small stutter...

I'm thinking Fuel Pump, I checked the distributer, changed plugs, new air filter, new fuel filter and run a tank of complet fuel system cleaner, then two tanks of injector cleaner through it.

Just to throw you off a lil more, I did clean the throttle body with some carb cleaner a while back and my dad was being a dick and didn't want to wait for the fumes to evaporate so I went to start it and it took a while cranking it over a couple times and a few small kicks untill it started up, in which after driving a couple miles seemed to drive perfect!!! Then as I got close to empty on gas the stuttering came back......

Alot of typing but wanted to give you as much info as possible... 2.9L 5speed.......

Thanks for the help guys...

I just had a similar problem with my 2006 Mazda 6 but it was doing it in all gears. Took it to the dealer and they said my fuel pump was shot. They replaced it under warranty and its running great now.

The easiest way to get to the pump is to remove the box.
But first you should get a fuel pressure gauge and connect it to the fuel line under the hood.
How many miles are on this 17 year old truck?
Has the timing belt ever been changed?

Quote:then as I got close to empty on gas the stuttering came back......

This could be a sign of water in your tank.
Fuel system and injector cleaners aren't designed to remove water.Only gum / varnish deposits from some additives / cheap fuels.
If water has laid in the fuel line any extended amount of time, such as the truck being parked for a couple months, the water in the fuel line will rust the inside of it.When the gas starts running through it again it will carry the rust particles the rest of the way to the engine. Thus plugging the injectors, sometimes completely, sometimes partially, and starve the engine for fuel.Especially under accelleration.

Reads 73000 but no doubt in my mind that its 173000 with roll over. Who knows on the belt, I'll look at that tomarrow...

When you say box where is that? That mean that its not above the tank?

Some good points, didn't think bout the water, unfortunetly thats a possibility. I ordered a pump anyway today being it was only 42 bucks. If I'm lucky thats all it is, if not, I guess I'll go huntin for H20 but I would think the amount I have run it it would have been kicked from the system now, which would leave only injectors/rust which would be some $$$ that I don't have. So I hope I luck out with the pump........

Thanks for the ideas........

Some people say box ,others say bed.Remove the tailgate and the the entire bed from the frame (not as hard as it sounds) then you have access to the top of the tank , as well as being able to inspect fuel/brake lines , suspension, and everything else.
As for the injectors,Just pull them out yourself and try spraying carb cleaner into the inlet side using the extension tube on the can.

if it happens when you get close to an empty tank of gas maybe your sucking crap off the bottom of your tank?

Yeah, man, damn it, I just put my toolbox on low profile that fits with a inch on each side to get a open end on the bolt to tighten it down....... WHAT A PITA.... But taking that bed off would be nice so I can look in the tank, won't be satisfied till I can rule that out.......

Oh, and I've taken bout 4 beds off so I know the drill, just a pain.... HHhhmmmm.....should throw a body lift on while I'm at it!
