STUPID Fuel Pump Lock ring....It broke. Bought a Dorman Part and it broke. Got on the Bay and found a Motorcraft one, now Im waiting again. I wasnt in a good mood today...

Mean While, I took the Cats off, and GUESS what. Yup, she burned 2 of them down. I didnt realize this truck has got 5 total Cats.... So as a temp fix we have her cut up and re welded with pipes and flanges, looks very good. Remember its only TEMPORARY till I know this was the cause. But the 2 cats after the first 2 O2 sensors are good, but the 1 under the motor cross over was GONE! As for the 2 other cats under the passenger side cab, one caught the debris and ruined it too. It got knocked out. I dont think I will have any issues running this temporally. The only O2 sensors Im worried about is the one between the 2 last set of Cats. The other 2 are not Post Cat.

Found a set of Walker Cats OEM bolt up for 300.00 and the other set are about 100.00 or so.

The Cat Chunks were welded together, thats why they didnt make noise. This is Funny because I got cocky in an earlier post and said they were fine....Sorry to the guy who posted the Idea to check them. I did but they were still solid enough to not rattle.

Will do. Actually looks like a blow torch melted the center of most of it. Cats are weird. No she ain't running yet. I also went to junk yard and picked up 3 other cat assembly's to modify. This is to only figure out what flows better and till I can afford new cats.

Taken off my camera phone, this is what is left of the lower cat that runs next to the transmission. Just tipped up the pipes and it fell out pretty quickly. The Upper cats are still ok so I left them in there, but I modded the lower pipe so It wasnt a resonator pipe. I still have 3 cats on the truck though. She should run damn good now being able to breathe and exhale.

Sounds like something I need to check. I've done about everything else. I don't have power issues though but... I'm not ruling anything out. I'm getting Lean banks on the Solous, it was just left now it's both. Hmm..... Thanks for the posts.

This was the absolute weirdest issue Ive ever had on a vehicle. I ran an Emissions test on mine and thats when my stomach dropped when I started seeing poor numbers and all the money I sunk into the top end of the motor.

But guys, this 3.0L has got some actual power to it with some of the slight mods I did. Just opening up the exhaust has done wonders, Getting GREAT fuel pressure, Injectors were sent out and flow balanced, Coil upgraded ( still have bounce at idle otherwise ), JBA 10mm wires I may go back to the OEM spec Plugs though, Denso's are good but I have a feeling.. Im in the process of getting a Fuel PSI gauge, Because I want to know these things.

Everything I did to this 3.0L was for the better. I deleted 4 of the 5 cats and I have no issues. Emissions come up passing even by my scanner, but I dont want to believe this scanner on that.

Im going to build another 3.0L with internal upgrades to handle some boost numbers.300 horse should be good enough, but even 250 is still respectable for a smaller V6

I had the same problem with my Honda dirt bike. The muffler collapsed causing it to fall on it's face at mid/high RPM. Free flowing exhaust is crucial for and kind of performance. Glad you solved the issue. Go do some donuts and celebrate.

I have extensive experience with the Ranger and some great resources as far as the 3.0 V6 goes. Not that I have exploited them to their fullest. It is fairly common knowledge that the 3.0 is famous for a rough idle. To the point where one would think something more serious is wrong. Trying to fix idle may well be a waste of time and money. As crappy as mine runs, I still get 20.5MPG. We have misfires on 1 and 5 now. I have a new coil, and 1&5 are on the same coil which would seem to mean that the coil is bad. I was going to swap it out with the old one but my friend says leave it alone, he believes we have a bad vacuum leak somewhere. We have checked everyplace for one. I'm doing a bit of research on uncommon vacuum leaks.

It seems that this is taking me a long time but... this is my yard truck. Actually, I'm getting a 4.0 engined vehicle and I'm gonna rebuild everything and swap it all out. I want some HP. LOL Good luck man. I say, drive that sucker !!

Touchdowns everyone !!

Changed the heads on my 05 3.0 couple weeks ago, got the rebuilt ones from dover.
Took me 2days taking my time without any issues.
Its a night n day difference from before. Idles like new, power is better, seems to pull at lower rpms easier.
All my emissions r 194000 original also.
If anybody needs to get heads for their 3.0 get them from dover heads.
Just sayin'!

I have been having the same issues you had ever since buying this 98 3.0 Ranger from a co-worker who had the Truck sitting for ~ 6 months, I have changed everything but the Fuel pump & Cats. The only code ever produced was Mis fire #6 twice at start up idle. So do you think the clogged cats were the main cause? or did you changed the fuel pump at the same time you opened up the Cat restriction?
