truck won't crank until I whacked the starter

how prone are the starters on the '91 rangers to failing?

I know it's 15 years old, but if it occasionally doesn't start (turning the key just makes a click noise), and did after I whacked it a couple times with my lugwrench, does that mean it's on its way out and needs replacement?

Where would I get a cheap replacements starter?

That usually means the brushes are worn out and you need a new starter. At least, that's what it's been when I've had that problem in past starters.

Yeah if you have to beat on it it is on its last leg. I would repace it ASAP. There really isn't anywhere I know of to get a cheap starter. Just remember that a starter is a core part and you will have to turn your old one in to get money back.

ehh...too late...the starter died, and the truck won't start anymore

I'll try to replace the starter...

ya, when you have to start banging on it, it is near replacement.

its not to hard, just unbolt from wired, unbolt from motor and reverse order for the new one

Man you guys want to take all the fun out of driving! If you don't have to hit something with a large object to start it, what's the point? Heck if you have to jump the Solenoid with a screw Driver too, you are in heaven!

hahaha, normally, I'd say this is true, I also think it's fun owning a vehicle that's no creampuff...something that might be cheap, but can get going with a little love. If you have to read your vehicle that much, you really get to know her front and back...

...however...


...when your vehicle is a daily driver, you rely on it. So if it needs a bang to start, but is on its last bang and won't start, it's not fun and games anymore. Sure, you know exactly what the problem is, but taking a few hours of your day to get it to a serviceable area, paying $$$ to get it towed, paying $$$ for parts, then knocking your commuter out of commission for 1-3 days is NOT worth missing work/class.

I know...I know...I'm not supposed to take what you said absolutely literally, and it's a really fun idea to run with, but I've got a bunch of sand up my vag today, since, after spending $1000+ on brake lines/pads/calipers/rotors/shoes/drums, $50 on oil/filter/radiator fluid flush, $45 on gatorback belts, in ONE WEEK, this truck is still not reliable enough to commute on. I couldn't even put the starter on myself because I would've missed work, and the bolts were in a tight spot with rounded off heads. So there goes another $30-$50 paying someone else (when he gets a chance) to unscrew a few bolts, swap out a part, and put the bolts back in (in addition to the $100+ for the starter).

But I reFUSE to throw in the towel!

My starter went last year, I think I paid around 90 bucks for a new [rebuilt] one. I think you get around 40 bucks core charge back if you give them your old one, I just went to auto zone.

it just feel in that bad spot on my older toyota i had i used to wack it every time i started it for a month lol..just once it stops in that worn out spot you gotta tap tap tap..

in other words starter time (:
