temperature guage -- hot

For the past few weeks, my temperature gauge will occasionally read hot. The "check gauge" idiot light comes on, and it's all the way up in the HOT zone. I think I usually let off the gas as I look at the gauge. It stays on HOT a second or two, and then falls back to normal.

Ideas?

EDIT: Oh, it's a 2002 with 140,000 miles

Bad sensor maybe? Have you checked your coolant levels?

keep an eye on that. You might either have a leak or could be burning it.
