2000 Ranger 3.0 - water pump repair or replacement?

My son has a 2000 3.0 that has a coolant leak. Trying to see where it is leaking from exactly is hard to tell. Looks to be more from the back side of the WP. Can't tell for sure. Once my son starts pouring in water in the radiator you can see coolant coming from the WP area and runs down the upper oil pan rail down to the ground. It seems to be more previlant on the drivers side than the passenger side. What is the time involved in getting to the pump? Changing out gaskets? Other things to replace or check while in there? Certain procedures? Talking with the service man he said about whether coolant might be coming out the timing cover. I asked how can you see that with all the access. in the way or if it was torn down. And he said they can pressurize the system. Which I think I can borrow a tool from Auto Zone with deposit.

So does that mean? The pump is bad? Gaskets bad? What causes that? If it's not a bad job how long might it take?

Do pressure test and see where it is leaking is the best way. If its at the weap hole that means coolant is getting past the bearing so it will leak out the weap hole. If its leaking at the gasket that's a bad gasket. I would just replace the pump. Clean the gasket mating surface really well then apply gasket sealer to the wp surface and stick your gasket on the pump. I did on a 3.0 at work and it took about an hour and ten minutes.

I will get a pressure tester. Do you replace the WP from the under side? How do you get the fan/clutch/ pulley shaft from the pulley itself? Should I have left the belt on to add in that? What all needs to be removed? Any step-by-step instructions would be wonderful. I have not worked on the newer vehicles except to change brakes, shocks and such. I just work on my 69 camaro. It's much easier.

This thread is kinda old he may not reply but its going to be a different procedure for your 4.0l but basically remove belt and possibly alternator/ ac compressor? Not sure the configuration on the 4.0 my 3.0 had two WP bolts hidden behind the ac compressor pracket so that had to come out but its very simple maybe 10 bolts in it the just wiggle it a bit to get it free then gasket on the new part and you'll probably have to swap the pulley to the new pump some come with them some don't if thats the case id advise trying to break the bolts lose on the pulley with the belt still on if you don't have air tools cause its a pain.
