Wow your gas mileage must have gone down the crapper, get an exhaust and intake system to help with performance, maybe a chip and Efan as well. Maybe you have those already, maybe not- I cant tell because you have nothing in your sig.

well shifting anything less then 3000, i have no power to accelerate.

i have no extra stuff on this truck since it is a 2nd vehicle behind my civic. the truck is used basically just for doing work around the house and for the winter.

i shift at about 2K and into 5th at about 40 mph (even on the street). ive been clicking about 19.5mpg average since starting driving that way. my first calculation was 18.5mpg when i bought the truck a couple of months ago.

keep in mind, these are averages of city and highway. about 70%city/30%freeway. AC is used rather often so its not bad and its probably not far off of the EPA estimates of what? 16/22?

Ditto man, thats exactly what I do, I go into 5th at around 40mph cruising around town and get pretty decent mileage

you truck has 163000 miles i think it might have a little harder time picking up and going then most... i think you might be expecting too much in the acceleration deparment i mean it take me about 10 sec to hit 60 when i redline every gear... and i have a exaust...

I shift at around 2500-3000 when i'm not in a hurry but when i need to get up and go its 4000 rpms. I have 140,000 with 31's so it has a little more trouble that when it was brand new.

it does alright. if i need to get further out of my own way, i shift a little higher. i seldom go over 3500 though. ever.

if i want fast i have other toys :D and even though my Cougar has 140K miles on the original motor, its still alot faster than the truck. (which has 21K on it)

Well I would say that shifting at 2000 rpms would be useless but most of you have 3.73's.

For those of us with the 4.10 rear end 2000 rpms is a pittifully low time to shift.
Optimally for gas mileage I will shift at 2500rpms anything lower and there is no where near enough power. Although it probably doesnt help that I live in a city of almost 2 million so you have to gun it to get a slot in traffic.

For more power out of the truck I will push it up to about 5000rpm if I really want it to go.

I always had enough power to push 33's, but then again mine wasn't stock really.

Yeah, I haven't had this problem. It doesn't accelerate nearly as slow as a Civic but it's also an automatic.

If I'm in a hurry I usually shift right about where I run out of tach (6000rpm,) if I'm not, probably around 4500. Of course, I'm only getting about 17mpg, but I don't care, work is paying for it.

i run mine right until it tachs out at 5700, so i throw around 52-5500, i cant understand why people call it the 3slow though its a lot better of a motor than a 4.0 sohc, lets just say i take off a lot harder and faster than a f-250 5.4 2v with intake, exhaust, and programmer by hypertech, my truck with intake and exhaust, everything else stock, both trucks with 4.10s except mine is open diff and his is locking

the only reason you take off better is cause you weigh less. and that seems a little high of a shift point man. what year is your truck?

mine redlines at 5200, but mine's an auto. I wouldn't think it would make a difference though. do you guys push it past redline all the time? or does the redline change throughout the years?
