Luck just turned for the worst...broke off water pump bolt

Well I tackled the waterpump today, pie job, it was going all smooth, had the old one off, had seal on new one and had it on with all the bolts. I was tightening then and I guess I just pulled too hard, broke off one of the top bolts....FTL. I say screw it, maybe it won't leak and will last until next week o whatnot, nope, I crank it and it pours out the coolant.

I take it all back apart, at which point I am a pro now...lol, and see the wonderful damage. I CAN'T get pliers on it because it broke off flush with timing cover :( I just get pissed off and put eveything up. Gotta go to Ford or hadware store for a 8mmx1mmx20mm flanged bolt now and geta good metal bit and an easy out. Problem is, those bolts are small, its gonna take a small easy out and bit.

Also its in a sensitive area as I don't want to fudge up pump sealing surface. Also, the bolt break point in not nice and flat which is going to make the dill bit and easy out wanna glide to the sides and mess stuff up. I guess I'll take a nail set and hammer a point into the bolt hopefully, then drill a hole and easyout that biotch. I eally hope I don't mess up or ill be retapping a hole the bolt hole :(

Any suggestions

try to make it as flat as possible... I end up using the center punch with one of those preloaded types - the just line it up and push no hammer needed kind does all the work for you - use it a few strikes and make sure to get it on center each time... should help you get as close to flat as possible that way... then start with a 1/8" drill bit, your gonna snap it, so try and not lose the tip and just go til you snap it again, get another bit and keep going til the easy out will take... drill with some type of cutting fluid to keep the bit sharp and you should be done in 20 minutes.... Its an 8mm bolt so I'm gonna say ballpark torque of 20-25ft/lbs...

Damn man that sucks huge ones Scott. Hope you get it fixed alright man, When I did the one on my 3.slo I used RTV and just tightened it up til the bolts started to feel tight and rtv was oozing out of the sides. As for getting that bolt out to bad you dont have a welder, you could tack a small nut on the top of the bolt and than use a socket and ease it on out.

Yea Scott, get someone with a welder to come over that seems to be the best idea right now.

The future father-in-law and I will be tackling the broke bolt tomorrow. He has good drill bits and nice easy outs. If those don't work, I'm sure he has a welder that we can possibly do as ya'll say and weld a nut on it. Ill update the situation tomorrow!

We tackled the truck today. He had the bolt out in 20 minutes with a drill bit and an easy out!

I then started on the waterpump and had it on in an hour after picking up some new bolts from advance (same size and all) I used sure-tack on the gasket (a new fel-pro gasket). I then get all the bolts in and snug them evenly and then tighten them just right. It takes like five minutes to get truck back together (putting idler and pump pullies back on, fan and shroud, belt, and intake). I let it run, check for leakes-nothing. I got happy-----for 5 minutes. Check temp guage, its overheating. I turn it off get pissed. Then realize that it probably needs more coolant b/c thermostat opens up and there is pobably none in the block. Add more coolant----runs GOOD!!

What an end to my awful week. I now have a new water pump and gasket, new front oil seal, new front brake pads, and changing the oil tomorrow.

If anyone needs help with either, I'm now the expert...lol just kidding. If I had it all to do all over, it wouldn't take long as I know how to do it all.

Glad to hear it's all fixed! Things never go as easy as planned, that's for sure. I always hated changing the thermostat in my Mustang... not the actual changing but watching the temperature creep up and up until it opened up and all the air pockets were gone!

Broken bolt

I have a set of left handed drill bits. About 50% of the time using them the bolt comes right out.
