Rattling in the engine

Hello, I have a 2009 ranger, 4.0 and it has begun to make a rattling noise once the engine is warm, when idle. If I give even the slightest amount of gas, it goes away immediately and seems to disappear while in Park as well.

I've done a bit of digging here and there and apparently there is/was a huge issue with timing chains and cassettes etc in the 01-04 era, but this sounds a lot like that. For what it's worth, there was a loud gurgling sound as well, but replacing the IAC valve seemed to clear that up immediately.

I only have 45k miles on it so hopefully whatever the issue is, it's still under warranty.

Thoughts?

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum

Timing chain tensioners use oil pressure to apply pressure to the chains to hold them tight and not rattle.

Cold oil is thicker so oil pressure is higher
Warm oil thinner so lower oil pressure

Higher RPM has higher oil pressure, than lower RPM.

So I would guess a tensioner or your oil pressure is at fault.

What oil are you running now?
Was it changed recently?

If using 10w-30 switch to 10w-40, that will raise oil pressure a bit

The sound may be caused by a worn out or dirty hydraulic lash adjusters.

Have you probed the engine with a stethoscope or a long handled screwdriver to the ear to try and pinpoint the loc of the noise? Similar thing happened to me a few weeks ago. At first I thought the engine was in "death mode" by the sound of the rattle. It only occurred after engine got warm & higher rpm's reduced the noise or made it disappear. And the check engine light was on. Fudge!

Crawled around underneath and determined something inside the CAT was rattling. Got the code read, turned out to be "Cat Conv operating below threshold"... or something to that effect.

Cat is warranted 7 or 8 yrs (I forget which) or upto 80,000 miles. So I need to get it into the shop to have it looked at. Mines a 2011 w/ 59,000 miles.

See this thread... https://www.ranger-forums.com/4-0l-o...rattle-148359/

Good luck, hope your situation is something similar rather than timing chain issues.
