I want to revive this thread to say that some kid in a new Taco wanted to 'race' me last night. It was a reg cab TRD, don't know what motor but from the sound of the exhaust it was probably the 4.0. From the stoplight, I don't know if he wasn't trying or if I just smoked him or what, but I had him by 3 cars by the time we hit 45.
THEN he decides to punch it up to 70-ish, but by that time I had stopped trying because we were in a 45 zone and I've gotten WAY, WAY too many speeding tickets. I wasn't about to do 70 in a 45 yet again at 9pm on a Sunday in the middle of town. So he pulls away but partly because I'm not flooring it anymore. And I can tell from the sound of his exhaust that he was. At 60 I hit the brakes and he's already at 70 and 2 carlengths ahead of me.
I know the new Tacos are much nicer and their 4.0's easily pull away from ours in the high range, but off the line, I would expect a much newer truck with an extra 10 grand on the sticker to win easily as well. After reading this thread it seems that they don't have the obvious advantage until we're at a speed that has nothing to do with towing/offroading/everything you buy a truck for.
Makes me wish I was still on 31's with 4.10's. I have 33's and 4.10s (for now) with a 50lb sandbag in back. He was on the stock 265/75/16's or whatever 31" tire they're running. I'm sure he enjoyed telling his friends about his 'win' and inventing BS to up the impressive factor... whatever it takes to justify that price tag and car payment that I don't have

ok just by reading this and people talking about how stuff was almost as powerless (for lack of a better word) as a 3.0 ranger. ok well i have one and it doesnt seem very powerfull. (had a 5.7 chevy 1500 before) and what im wondering is....is the 4.0 ranger really THAT much more powerfull than a 3.0?

my moms 4runner has the 3.4 and it waxes my truck. my buddy has an edge w/ the 4.0 and after driving both i know the 4runner would smoke that too. now my buddys tacoma has the 4.0 and its even faster than the 4runner. so pretty much a toyota is faster. but you can also consider the motors have more hp in the 1st place and are DOHC

A 3.SLOW has near the same performance as the 2.3 duratech, with 2 extra cylinders. .
A tech at my work has an X-rummer that has the URD supercharger. He has done a little work to it, like new cams, ECU that gives him launch control, traction bars, mostly bolt on stuff. He has spanked Lightnings, Vettes (not Z06). The thing is fast.
But you are comparing apples to oranges. If I had the money, hands down I would take the Taco over the Ranger. A) The things run for half a million miles, if not more B) quality they are far better C) They look better IMO.

A 4.0 reg cab 05+ Taco would be sick. If I had the dough I might even have to get one of those. It would be in the high 14's stock

There are xrunners in the high 14s stock, and they all are extended cab long beds. Im a little more modded, and knocking on 13s without a blower or spray yet.
If you think the 4L in a reg cab would be sick, check this out.
