4.0 Replacement engine

Hi All, I have an 06 ranger XLT 4x4, it was showing a down stream o2 sensor code, I went to the parts store and the guy said, he needed the production date, (month and day), because there were two different sensors, I got the part and put it in. The performance was worse, ( scratching head), the replacement engine is an 06, but apparently takes the other sensor, I'm wondering what other components might be a problem matching up to the replacement engine? Thanks, James

I should start at the beginning, the engine feels like has a slight (intermittent miss) , through it's speed range, it was showing an 02 sensor code. I put the new sensor in and (no improvement.) The motor has new plugs, air filter, fuel filter, and MAF. I took it to a Ford dealer to get it analyzed, the technician said there were no vacuum leaks, but it was showing a code for a cat, I had the cat changed, (no improvement). Plug wires, coil, and computer left to go.
