Pic of my broken crankshaft

Here is a pic of my crank that snapped in 2 one morning while starting it up. Was not pretty. I now have a used motor in the truck with less miles, so it's not too bad. Never seen nothing like it.

The rust you see is just from sitting in the bed of the truck for a few weeks.

I've heard of happening before on the 4.0L OHV, never saw a pic though.

Crankshafts LOVE to break at the dampner/keyway area, it's the weakest place on a crank. I have replaced a few in John Deere diesel engine. They beefed that area up just for that reason. Sorry man!

Hard to believe but yes, a crank will break and not the key. Wish I could explain it, I'm sure someone here can. Picture this. On a new combine, the crank breaks at the dampner and it goes flying. No fan belt anymore, thus engine temp goes way up. The rest of the engine burns down. I replace the entire engine. Won't forget that one. WARRANTY!!!!!!!
