Ask me tuning questions
#352
Timing is everything.
I have an issue. I have a 2004 4x4 ranger 4.0 and It developed a loud rattle, and then on the way home started running really ruff, barely making it home. I pulled the engine, pull the front timing chain cover off, and sure enough, the plastic portion of the tensioner was gone and the chain had been loose and hitting the metal portion of the tensioner that remained. I then pulled the valve covers and turned the crank so the #1 piston was at the top, and the keyway on the crank was at top dead center, or 12:00. I then checked the slots on the cams to make sure they were parallel with the top of the heads. The right side is parallel but the left side looks to be at least a tooth off. How can this be when both cam timing chains, guides and tensioner are in tact? They both run off the jack shaft so how could one cam have jumped?
Also, the truck barely made it home. I
Can't see how, even with the loss of the tensioner, it would have caused the truck to run so poorly.
Lastly, from what I've read all 4.0 ranger 4x4s should have a balance shaft, but mine doesn't.
Need some feedback. I can't afford to replace all the timing components and reinstall just to find out the cams were correct, and by leveling the cam slots to the heads I screwed up the timing. I realize I've thrown a lot out there but any help would be greatly appreciated.

1998 4.0
Hi
Just got my ranger in may used 160k seems sluggish and kinda under powered, and it get very bad gas milage 13 14 15ish. I was wondering if this is normal for rangers. Or if i should have the engine checked and tuned.
thanks, Derek

My 2003 4.0 had full power up until 195000 with years of regular maintenance.
I would check the condition of a few things to see if the power may be resurrected
All the usual maintenance stuffs...new oil and filter, new air filter, new fuel filter, check the MAF sensor, check the plugs and wires, check the coils.
I once had a little hesitation in my rig, and when I ran through this list and changed the fuel filter and cleaned the MAF sensor, VROOM VROOM!!! Easy peasy.
Deeper, you could check compression. Lower compression could mean internal chaos. Cool thing is, you can find a compression tester cheap like 25-30 bucks at Harbor Freight or Amazon.
O2 sensors are not out of the question. I'm sure I've missed a few things that others may chime in with.
As far as mileage...I do get 14-16 in the city, so you're right there, but you no go-go. This might help you get your go-go back.

I shouldn't address this because I do not KNOW but I believe it makes no difference.
I ASSUME boots come from the boot maker in varying shades of grey-to-black because you'll see wire sets with inconsistently colored boots in catalog listings.
How many miles on your 2001 4.0 SOHC?

Regarding the plug wires, I ordered them from Rock Auto. I went back and referenced the pic and it also shows one gray wire boot. Weird.

4L OHV tuner
I realize this is an old thread.... but, I'm wondering if anyone here has information on a good tuner for the 4L OHV motor? Just trying to see what current information/recommendations are out there. I recently rebuilt my 99 4L with a few mods and looking to boost performance maybe just a little more over stock tune. Added 1.7 roller rockers, shorty headers, and gibson catback exhaust.

Superchips is mentioned above (post 353?). Contact them. Get prices and go to where they send you (websites etc.)
Look at almost all of leadfoot's posts.
The search function on these boards exist in name only so try scrolling around and see the charts and columns whiz by. Those will be posts on tuning. Stop there and read a few.

I recently changed to headers, cat back exhaust, 1.7 roller rockers with hydraulic lifters, and new heads. I don't have a tuner on it but I know it's flowing more air than before and not throwing any codes. You probably won't notice any power increase if you just change to headers. With everything I did, there wasn't a huge increase of power so I'm hoping to get a tuner and see what that will do for a little more at the pedal.

Is yours the pushrod motor? Sorry, just not sure when it changed to OHC...

yeah man 2000 was the last year for the old school pushrod 4.0. Just wondering what can be done to add some power to these motors. It's a complete dog compared to my older 92 4x4 Ranger...

I agree on the limited power. I upgraded my rockers to roller 1.7s with Morana racing setup, but still doesn't seem to have as much as I'd like. You can try his 1.8 setup but after all the problems I had with it I wouldn't recommend. Morana is working on a new rocker for this motor which I like but needs some details worked out with the manufacturer... Tom was lots of help with my project upgrading to 1.7 roller rockers and very knowledgeable. Now I'm looking to get a tuner, probably flashpaq by superchips, as there don't seem to be many options out there but pretty sure a tuner will give a noticable boost. Have not contacted superchips yet but planning to and get their input.

So, I have an 04 ranger 4.0. I just got the obd2 mx+ bluetooth scanner. I've seen some stuff saying I can use it to tune. Has anyone had any experience with them? What apps do you use? I'm specifically wanting g to fix the lean condition that causes shudders between 40 and 60 mph. I will be putting new plugs and all in it (just got it). The odometer says 328,000 miles but I'm pretty sure the engine has been rebuilt or replaced. It has plenty of gitty up. Will spin the tires pretty easily. Just that damn shudder. I'm thinking about eventually maybe adding a turbo bit that's future dreaming lol. Tha KS in advance I'd anyone actually responds to this ancient thread lol
