I've seen all your exhaust pics, but I have a question (Borla)

So I am going to buy a Borla ProXS muffler with 2.25" in/out. It seems it's about a 50/50 split between Flowmaster and Borla. My Flow 40 sounded like junk on my '99 Chevy 5.3 V-8 so I will try a Borla.

I see most of you with a Borla use the center in/offset out right? How would a center/center work? Also, I see the muffler shops mount the muffler vertically, why not horizontally? Is there not enough room to do that? Nothing wrong with it, just wondering.

I plan on getting my muffler and stainless tips on Ebay soon, just tring to get it all planned out in my head. Thanks.

I went Borla on mine and I loved it. I didn't get the Pro-XS, I went with the regular Borla name, 40658 was the part number. Tucked and fit perfectly in the perfect spot. Sounded good too, running with 2.25" pipe.

Don't know why they do the vertical install... just how they do it perhaps? keeps it out of the way of other stuff? Beats me. I went with the center/offset because it gives them a little more lee-way as far as how they route the pipes. I'd imagine a center/center would work just as well. I can't wait until I can get my old Borla on my new truck! Oh how I miss it so!

It would work fine if borla made the ProXS in a 2.25" center/center...but the smallest they offer in center/center is a 2.5" i believe. Theres really no difference with the offsets as far as flow performance. Some cars are so tight underneath that they need the offset to work the pipes right. On our trucks the offset actually allows for the muffler to sit higher (i.e. not hang as low) when mounted in the vertical position.
Also, I see the muffler shops mount the muffler vertically, why not horizontally? Is there not enough room to do that? Nothing wrong with it, just wondering.
The reason they do that is for clearance with the drive shaft...if you mount the muffler sideways you could potentially experince a rub between the muffler and the spinning driveshaft. If theyre too close and either device has 'slop' they could rub and cause some serious problems down the road. I remember one guy back in the day that had a problem with this rubbing.

P.S. I love my proXS and its not even broken in yet.

I was debating wether center/center would be louder than center/offset. It probably wont make much of a difference though. If you dont want to get ripped off by an exhaust shop when buying the muffler, i got my Borla from ebay, and yes it was BRAND new. Plus Borla's are t309 Stainless steel, so no rusty there. Good luck, and let us know if ya have anymore questions.

I see....yes the muffler would be darn close to drive shaft. The stock muffler is more skinny and long thus clears good.

I will buy my Borla maybe today. Thanks for all the input. First I'am going to ask the local muffler shop if he handles stailness steel or not. If not I'll keep looking. Might as well since the muffler will never rust out. Maybe it's not worth it?

Defenitly look for stainless piping, tips, and of course the muffler is already stainless.

Sohc and Ohv sound VERY similiar, the Ohv's are just have a little deeper note at higher RPM's.
