Wake up a 4.0 SOHC
Looking to add some horsepower to my 01 4.0 SOHC Ranger. I'm currently looking into a turbo kit and a boost cooler. The horsepower gains from this would be ideal, but I really don't want to get into fabbing the entire turbo kit, as this truck is my daily driver; and a shop would charge an arm and a leg.
Has anyone had luck with headers? How about ECM upgrades or chips? (Please post what model chip you used as I don't want people commenting about something they haven't even used). I understand that a CAI is a waste of money as modern vehicles come with that basic design. Is a turbo the only way to get significant hp gains short of tearing the entire engine apart and adding high performance parts? Cost isn't really a big deal, but I'm not paying a shop $2,000+ to install a $600 turbo kit. Any advice is appreciated.

I have been running one of the new moddbox m90 supercharger kits with great success. Currently running 3.0 psi which is good for 30hp or so I have a few thousand miles on it now and am planning phase 2. This will be larger injectors and MAF with intercooler and custom tuning running 5 or 8 psi. With that I should be able to add about 90 hp to the stock numbers ( based off the moddbox dyno sheets)
It's been a great easy to instal option that is nice and modular. I have been able to pick and choice everything I need to get the little bit of extra omph to move my heavy truck around.

And yes, getting more air into an engine is what all power upgrades are about, compression ratio upgrades help but more air is the big one.
A 4.0l engine has more power than a 2.5l because it can pump more air thru each cylinder, and if you have more air....................you can burn more fuel :)
Bigger cam allows more air in, turbo or super chargers Force more air in, and by air I mean Oxygen, oxygen combines with the hydrocarbons in gasoline which allows combustion.
Nitrous Oxide systems add more oxygen, so more fuel can be burned, outside air has 21% oxygen, a nitrous system raise the oxygen in the intake to 33%
All engines are designed to support their spec horse power and torque, increasing horse power can cause engine parts to fail, and while there are no guaranties usually a 20% increase from rated horse power can be supported by stock engine parts.
And there are two ways to increase vehicle performance.
Yes, increase the horse power, but you can also lower the weight the horse power has to move.
A stock 2.5l engine in a go-cart will beat a turboed, Nitrous 4.0l in a semi-truck every time, lol, the why is obvious, the weight each engine has to move plays a big part in performance.
And switch to an E-fan to get better performance and room, the belt driven fan uses up some horse power.

Thanks for the replies guys, Mike I think I might pm you to pick your brain about that sc kit if you don't mind.
Ron I considered adding a bottle to it but I was looking for constant hp, not pushbutton smiles . If I do go that route it will be after I add more horsepower.
I guess I was looking for some sort of magical bean that I could bolt on and rock with, but forced induction is probably the way I'll go
