Icon5 Clicking/ticking coming from engine, smell of burning oil as well....

Okay, lately I've been hearing a tick/clicking coming from the engine. It's more noticeable when I step on the throttle rather than at idle, and it's extremely annoying... Tonight, I went to test the new aux backup lights and now I noticed the smell of burning oil when I was backing up. I have a feeling that my engine is on it's last legs... Thoughts? Oh, it started happening Saturday morning after I hit the mud hole I always get stuck in...

Okay, I put 2+2 together... I think that when I hit the hole, I sucked water, mud, and **** into my intake and that **** made it's way into the engine, sand scarred my cylinders and lifters, hence the ticking sound. And oil's getting into my cylinders now because the cylinders are ripped up... Plausible? Yes. Absolutely in fact. I need to get a different fuggin intake...

Dusting an engine really sucks, you end up having to go through everything, from the cam, to the pistons/cylinders, to the crank bearings at the bottom, and all the little push rods and crap in between. Hopefully you're wrong for your sake.

No, not thread delete... I'm still looking for thoughts. And yeah, I'm hoping that's not it. If it is, I'll start saving up and beating the **** outta this one, then go buy myself a new truck.

If water got into the combustion chambers then a bent connecting rod is more likely.

I would do a compression check.

Sounds like your cam sensor has been bad for awhile now....

It wasn't enough water to bend a rod, just enough to get grit on there. Brad, I'll have it checked out next time I get a chance.

seafoam and change the oil see if that helps and rather than run 5W-30 try running 10W-30 or 40

10W's a heavier oil, right? I'm running Valvoline full synthetic 5W right now, so when it's a bit closer to my next change I'll give the seafoam a shot. Where is the cam sensor located? I'm gonna try pulling one from a truck in the junk yard when I go today.

Pull off the intake and see if there's dirt in there, before assuming that's what happened.

Why would you wait to change the oil? If you have crap in your engine change the oil now, don't wait until you hit the 3k mile mark.

Just because there's dirt on the filter doesn't mean there is inside the intake. Pull it and check it, verify the facts before assuming.

^ this. It's cheap enough to buy an upper intake gasket, and easy as hell to remove it and check. At the same time, buy a new oil change with seafoam.

Remember " Assuming makes an *** out of U and ME"

1 water isn't compressible any amount getting to the cylinder can bend rods.

2 5w and 10w are nearly the same thing and that is the cold weight of the oil. If you want to try thicker oil to fill in gaps you should run a 10/40 or 15/50.

You still need a compression check.

My compression is fine. I still have just as much power as I did last week and the week before. Pulled the intake today and it's got a nice blanket of mud inside the tube. I didn't notice the smell of burning oil either... I'm going to have the garage install my fuel filler neck sometime this week, so I'll have them check it out and see what they think. My idea of what happened was just my paranoia kicking in...

I am having a ticking too, it comes and goes but when it is there it is a constant tick at the same rate. I get oil changes all the time, every time I hit miles and/or 3 months. What is this Sea Foam stuff, should I add some? If so do I just pour it in my Engine Oil and which type should I use? I was on their site and saw that they have a gas one too, should I add that too?

Have a friend with you...seafoam, pick it up at walmart, kmart, anywhere that sells automotive stuff. About $8 a can. Pour half into your fuel tank at fillup, then have your friend keep the truck running by feathering the throttle and pour the rest into the vacuum line from the brake booster. It WILL smoke horribly, but run perfectly after.

I talked to the guys at my local Advanced Auto Parts and he told me how to do it. They also said I should do the oil too and do it right before an oil change (about 100 miles before). I don't think this has even been done to my Ranger and it has 220,000 miles, so it is due.

Where is the vacuum line at in a 2004 Ranger 4.0 V6 SOHC?

I believe it is this line but I have no idea how to remove it, or how I would put it back on. It looks like it is held on by a metal clip, but I tried undoing it and it didn't move to much.

I also saw that it is possible to use the spray and spray it straight in to the carburetor, would that be easier or would I have to take apart to much of my engine to do it that way?
