The deal with my truck.

So, as some of you may know, my truck decided to catch a bug recently.

On the way up to Rhode Island, my trip was cut short due to:

- Slight misfiring
- A burning smell every now and then
- CEL (gone now, codes unknown)
- Rough idle, and this thing drank fuel like CRAZY.

Every now and then I have had the "rotten egg" smell, which is possibly an issue with a catalytic converter?

I have already replaced the IAC (which might not have been a part of the issues, but I needed one anyways) This made a big difference in the trucks idle.

So, the plans are:

- New pcv valve
- New wires, and possibly new coil pack (screamin demon maybe?)
- o2 sensor.

Plugs arent old, so Im not worried about replacing them until everything else is replaced.

Also to add, I have a vacuum leak somewhere. I had an emissions evap. code a while back, and I think that the CEL might have been the same thing. After replacing all of the above, I believe that I will have a smoke test done to find the leak.

Any other info that you guys can offer will be extremely helpful. Im trying to get this stuff done with the little daylight that I have each day.

Thanks guys.

What about wires, have they been replaced with the plugs and what type of plugs. They say autolites and motorcrafts are the best to run in Fords. Have you cleaned the MAF and TB and reset the computer? Change the fuel filter yet? How many miles?

Check over all your fuel lines for the leak and you mean a pcv valve?

I had a vacuum leak a while back and it had to do with the pcv hose that ran off of it to the other side of the engine. That could be a possibility for you.

I'm with Mark though on cleaning the MAF and TB and intake while you are at it then resetting the computer.

The codes should be stored, you should go ahead and have them read

Dang lol, I knew i was going to put PVC lol.

Plugs are motorcrafts. Wires are stock wires from factory. MAF is clean, and cleaning TB will be added to the list. Computer was reset.

Fuel filter was changed with the plugs, so its good. Only 80k miles.

Im also thinking the same about the vacuum leak location.

I'd be interested to see what the codes are. I'm sure others are too.
But i say you get those first before you start throwing money at your truck. i've nickel and dimed myself too many times looking for an issue.
Some of your issues remind me of a Vac leak AND a bad/dirty MAF. When your truck is running, unplug the MAF. your truck should begin to run extremely poor. If you unplug the MAF and there is no change, then you forsure have a bad MAF.

If you truck gets to where it tops out at about 30mph, it is defintiely your cat... If the plugs are new, pull them to see if you're running rich/lean too... Could be an injector problem..... The only thing I could think of that would cause the problems you're having and the CEL to be on, then go off is the cat... Sometimes when breaking down internally, they will have a real bad clog, then it seems to clear up for a bit before total failure (at total failure, your truck wont have much power and will eventually only get up to about 30-40mph and sound like its redlining at 40mph.

Pull a few plugs and check their condition they will tell you how you engine is running rich or lean. Also i would get the upgraded PCV hose the new one looks more like a dryer hose with little bumps on it.

It caught the same gremlin that Dave's truck has haha.

Before you do ANYTHING and waste time and money guessing, get the codes scanned. You are shooting in the dark by playing with the MAF, Throttle Body, reading the plugs etc.

The MAF or throttle body should not cause enough of a lean condition for a misfire, and usually a clogged converter will not cause a CEL since the downstream sensors will still read correctly. A catalyst failure or lack of a catalyst will cause the upstream and downstream sensors to switch at the same time, and set a P042x and/or P043x DTC.

I have the same issue. Bank 2 sensor 2 I believed was the issue it was reading correct voltage. It was a simple exhaust leak and cracked PCV hose. Still have yet to fix it.

Well, no progress.
Ill have to wait until after Christmas to continue to work on it.
The only code that has been thrown is p0456. So that means I STILL have a vacuum leak somewhere.

Still mis-firing, but not as bad. Now its mainly noticeable in 5th gear at normal rpms.

I gave the pcv valve a good looking over tonight. A small rub mark, but no noticeable holes. I might replace it with an aftermarket elbow like one posted in another thread.

Did you shake it? it it still rattles, throw it back in and start your truck, if theres a big enough leak to throw a code, you'd be able to feel it with your hand drawing the air.

You need propane to find the leak easier or a smoke machine. Propane will give you a general idea where the leak is. But the smoke will pin point it. Remember injector o-rings that are not sealed will cause a vaccuum leak!

p0456 is not a vacuum leak, it is an evap leak. Disconnect the line that goes from the vapor management valve to the intake and block the intake off to see if the misfire goes away. If the VMV is stuck open or if raw fuel is in the charcoal canister, this can cause a misfire, stalling or this DTC

Sorry, I got the evap leak confused with a vacuum leak. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Ill have to try this later today. Getting ready for Christmas eve parties!

dont know if the ohc version is the same as the ohv as far as the intake setup, but a few years back i had a failed fuel rail gasket that gave me a bad vac leak i just couldnt find. but im unsure as to what the intake setup is on the ohc, it could be completely different from my '93.

This line falls apart often. Mine is all soft and spongy when I pull it off my hands get covered in the hose material.
