So my motor jumped time last week causing massive internal damage (according to ford dealer). There quote to replace the motor and labor for $7400 was quickly rejected by myself. I found a 4.0 out of 2002 to replace to 4.0 out of my 2003 for $550 with 81,000 miles with a DOA warranty. My question is, what gaskets do you recommend replacing when doing the swap? I don't want to have to make 50 trips to auto zone buying different things so a list of things that is a good idea to swap while the motor is out would be helpful. Also, this being my first swap ever, do you guys have any ideas to throw my way that might make to task a little easier? any info would be greatly appreciated

 

While the motor is out I would do Head gaskets, Rear main oil seal, Oil pan seal, Valve cover gaskets, maybe buy a new starter, intake manifold seal (if there is one) Thats what I did on my 87 chevy when I pulled the motor and rebuilt it.

 

i honestly would not do any of the above. the last thing i would want to do is dig into a sohc motor to do head gaskets unless you know what you are doing and unless it really is needed. it is not as simple as an 87 350 with a carb on it.
the starter is super easy to do, dont waste your money on a new one unless the current one doesnt work. the only thing i would do is the rear main seal and a new clutch if your truck is a stick.
