JBA & xcal2= happy (I hope)!

Hey guys.
so the time came to try and wake my truck back up, after the Mt's its kinda slow again & my mpg is getting bad! i thought i used to see like 17 city & 20+ highway , but now i just drove 400 miles and average 15mpg highway (with using a lot o cruz control and not much over 75mph) so my plan for a bit more zip and hop fully more mpg The xcal2 is in the mail and i requested an 89 mileage 89 performance & 91 performance tune! should be fun. Im a bit weary of doing the install tho.

Oh almost forgot the best part!
I know people have mixed feelings about doing headers on the 4.0 sohc, (ive read a lot of forums) but for the price* & getting imo the best finish ceramic silver!
AND THE PRICE for the jba's ..... $318 shipped to my house!!! they were on clearance from performance parts(last ones left i think) sorry suckers!

some guy on the other ranger site (rps) had dynoed a set and i guess saw some torq loss, and not much if any hp gain, But i think he may be wrong, because for one he had stock muffler tubing/with a performance muffler, i have the 2.5 magnaflow, + i agree it would be very difficult to loose power with these, they look nice and jba is a good company. and i would be happy with the added/ throttle response , noise, & possible mileage gains.
Zach that's good to know that they go on easy! I'm very excited about putting them on tomorrow! ill post some pics of the install and finished result.(if any one cares! hahaahah)

Today
I changed my oil with some Mobil 1 full synthetic & i re-flashed the ecu with the xcal, trying out the 91 perf, and WOW !!!!! this thing REALLY MAKES A HUGE DIFRENCE !
THANKS FRED !!!!
the truck pulls so much harder! and sounds deeper and more powerful .(not sure if its possible to describe the sound of more-powerful ha!)
I unfortunately could not put the headers on because of work schedule, and worse than that , San Jose CA, is having a crazy heat wave ! i saw my trucks miroir temp gage show 110f
and constantly over 103, this is due to some road heat radiation, but damn its hot as ****.
I now sort of wish i had gone my other plan/route , 20" rims low pro tires and removing the blocks & dee cranking the tbars :(
Naw lowered trucks a LAME!

[jk to the peeps who slam theirs, every one else: not jk]

Just to recap: XCAL2=GOOD FRED from Rouge-performance= GOOD

Damit

Hey again,
So i started my header install on Monday,
It went something like this
jacked up the truck , sprayd some bolt loosener stuff on the stock manifolds,
started to Really Wrench Hard on the Y pipe Bolts and all of a sudden Bam !
The Breaker bar/wrench slipped off the bolt and hit me in the face ! I was all like WTF , stood up really quick and checked a mirror.
Yup i broke my nose !
its not that painful to me because i can tolerate a lot of pain , but it still sucks,
worse than that thou is my darn egr tube will not fit back on. the header causes it to come up short & it may need to be re-plumed . I am going to try and torch the egr tube and then bend it wail hot( not on the truck that is)
So after about 6-7 hours i got a broken nose, a broken truck and a walk to work, f*ck !!!!
Ps: i want to go to the hospital cause i have health insurance , but without my only source of transport and still working my *** of at my job I'm kinda screwed.
Don't feel bad thou , its kinda funny i Guss & i got a few hugs from girls , For my "cute nose" being mashed hahaha

I did not touch my truck all day cuz i was like F that **** , and ive been working all day/ with a broken unset nose , so my only motivation to fix/ or finish that bastard is that i can drive myself to the doctor

Scroll to the bottom, I put my own JBA Ceramic's in a whiel back and had the same issue.. and solved it on the same day.. the pics should help with the problem!!! It shows some copper piping, and compression fittings all sorted out to give the proper extension. Its the one thing JBA doesnt ever let you know hehe

cool thanks a bunch that's very helpful !!
i was able to take my hole egr tube out then i put it in a vice , and made a small bend in it , right before the sensor , then right before the top fitting, i found it nearly impossible to get the top bolt, on the egr started so, i removed the two screws that hold that round egr thing on to the throttle body , then threaded the large egr onto it and replaced the 2 bolts that i removed first.
So its definenlty possible to not have to work the plumbing.
BTW the "injuries" not really that bad at all, i was kinda just like ****.... then kept working on the truck.
and today i got some pretty sweet pain pills.
I have to take a break on it till this weekend to put the passenger side on.
Its kinda weird driving around with one stock cast manifold and one (1) bad-*** ceramic header ! definitely runs "smother" it kicks over easy-er, and kinda funny, today i was on the highway and lost my rain guard rubber peace that covers up the shock/manifold , it was in the bed of the truck and flew out at around 95 mph hahaha. so i guss the headers will be peepin out forever !
I think people wanting the jba's should not get discouraged by any of this, the headers are really cool & just by nature headers in a late model car/truck are lame to put on.
Thanks for the idea's

Anythign electrical gets in the way on new vehicles

My old 88' ranger woudl be as easy as unbolting the old ones, and bolting teh new ones on.. no need to pull off inner fenders and pull a header up through a maze of wires and valves and tubing.. only to find you have to extend an exhaust reburner *sigh* But, it pays for it in the end!! And all of this done before you get an xcal only increases the amount of gain out of the xcal.. thats why I have been waiting on the Xcal, I'm planning on doing whatever I can engine wise, then putting a chip programmer on to really feel an oomph in it.

I am pretty stoked, I just got my JBA's in the mail on Monday, and I am with him above about waiting on the programmer. I have a few more things to bolt on before I order my Xcal

I don't know hahaha i was super exited about the 91 performance tune so Ive just been using that. but on a way good note : im fairly sure that with all city driving and alot of flooring it I got around 18mpg , and Ive never seen this good of mileage with the type of driving that's been going on.

the new rabbits are estimated at like 7.8s 0-60 with a manual.. so i dont think you would have a problem, unless it comes to cornering! lol

So any new news bud? :-) I hope you got it all finished up, time allowed.. the passenger side one was a tad easier then the driver side in my own opinion, only because i had to dick around with the EGR problem on the drivers side.

Let us know how it goes! :-D

Thanks, Update is... I purchased some jack stands today to make the install "safer" And I will finish it up Monday, then probably wash the truck and take some good pics, cuz cell phone pics don't really cut it, and i desperately need to degrease the engine bay ! (those last pics are just embarrassing) Ps: safety police need not read....... today i hit 100mph in the truck ! a new record ! ya ! it was up hill to and not really trying that hard.
