4.0 OHV performance guide

not that I would be doing an engine swap anytime in the near future. but I was thinking alot about them, when I thought how it would be cool to be able to build and keep the 4.0 OHV instead. Thought it would be cool to start a guide for us OHV guys.
Stuff like Heads, Headers, chips, Superchargers. anything that would help.

My 4.0 OHV mod list:
- UPD
- Screamin Demon
- K&N drop in filter
- efan
- Dynomax cat-back
There is quite a bit of stuff that can be done to the 4.0 OHV.....
For instance:
- 410 Comp Cam (more agressive than stock)
- 422 Comp Cam (more agressive than the 410)
- Morana 4.5L stroker kit ( http://www.moranav6racing.com/catego...?CategoryID=32 )
- port and polish heads
- headers (JBA prefered for the 4.0)
- high or lower compression pistons (depending if you wanted to add turbo/supercharger)
when my engine goes, it will be stroked to the 4.5L with a 422 Comp Cam......i couldn't imaging haveing .1L less than a 4.6 v8 in a v6.....me personally i would rather do the stroker kit than drop a v8 in.....easier, and you would have a sleeper.....pop the hood an NO ONE would know....

i have done my research on the 4.0 OHV......the stroker kit will put the engine at roughly 260-290HP.....that according to Morana......
i don't want a supercharger....
this will be my setup when my engine goes:
- Morana 4.5L stroker kit
- Comp Cam 422 cam
- port and polish heads
- ARP bolts throughout
- UDP
- efan
- K&N intake
- JBA stainless headers
- JBA exhaust
- Screamin' Demon coil pack
i figure that will run me roughly $3500 to do since i will do most of the work myself, except for the port and polish....and i already have the UDP, efan, and Screamin' Demon......

that is a sweet setup for that type of supercharger.....that took a lot of custom work cause i doubt that is a kit....
how much boost is he running and what else does he have done to the engine?
for a Ranger, i think that style is too much....a roots style is much better and takes up less room.....

you know, this is really the only thing that i wonder about when i buy my next ranger. Would i want the 4.0 OHV in the earlier '00 and down or an 01 with the sohc?? i mean i rather find a cheaper gen 3 or something with the 4.0 ohv in it then having to buy a 01+ with the sohc in it. im just not really sure. id like to find a 97-98-99 ranger for a decent price with the ohv. But i mean are they really that powerful? and how are they compared to a 3.0? i know my 3.0 in my 94 was a dog but overall nice truck which sometimes regret trading.

the OHV is a good engine for low end power....

Well I have...
From the Cat Back exhaust..Borla Pro XS
K&N FIPK Intake
Bamachips XCAL2
and..the 66mm Throttle body..
What else can I do??
Im thinkin either E-fan, or the coil pack...
What would give me the best result? I always thought the underdrive pulley system would be sweet but im not too sure how it works

i recommend 100% an efan AND a Screamin' Demon coil pack.....IF you get an efan, get an efan from a '94-'95 Ford Taurus.....it fits the radiator perfectly (with some minor trimming of the shroud) and has a fan shroud that covers the entire radiator.....grab yourself an efan controller from Summit for $50 and install it......use the high side of the Taurus efan (has 2 speeds) (the high side is the black/yellow wire)......you can feel the fan sucking air through the radiator from the front......it is probably the smartest thing i did.....
the UDP minimuizes the amount of turns the engine has to turn to turn the accessories (alternator, a/c pump, water pump, power steering pump)......it gets rid of some strain on the engine allowing it to send more horsepower through to the ground....i have one and recommend it to anyone....

I've been contemplating selling my truck for an SVT Contour or an Exploder. But sometimes i just want to keep it and rebuild the motor and make it quick. but from what i've heard, the SOHC's were better, but the OHV's were stronger, boosting wise or something.
