X-Cal 3 Interchangability

I have the opportunity to buy a X Cal 3 from a guy I recently met. From what I understand the X-Cal 3 is only good for one VIN number. The guy says that his has been cleared so the VIN is no longer attached, and is interchangeable between the same engines. He says he ran it on both his ranger and his explorer sport. Is this possible? Also he has a 220 high output alternator which was only on for two weeks before he sold the truck. Is 500 bucks a reasonable price for both the X Cal and alternator?

My X Cal 2 was on another guy's truck before I bought it. He sent the vin number with me and Doug at Bama Chips cleared it and set it up for my truck. You should be fine if it's been cleared.

Plan on spending $100- $150 to make the tuner work on your truck. Considering its $379 brand new with custom tunes for the truck, even paying $200 would mean you are spending as much as a new one once the tunes are done.

If he didn't clear it, plan on spending $200-300 to make it work on your truck. This means paying $100 for it would put you over the cost of a new one.

How well do you trust him?

If he returned his truck to stock, you just need to buy new tunes. This varies from vendor to vendor. Some places sell three custom tunes (via email) for under $150. The software can be downloaded to your computer and the tuner can be plugged in to upload the tunes on the computer.

Well hes a friend of a friend lol. He asked if I would like to try it out before I bought it, but thought it would need to be re calibrated before it was usable.

A guy totals his car. two weeks later he finds the tuner in a drawer and places it on ebay. That scenario happens a bunch. It has to be irritatating to get something used, but end up paying more than new when its all said and done.

Agreed. I will stick with buying a new one. Maybe I will still pick up that alternator from him though.
