I haven't used my four wheel drive in a couple weeks and the last time was when we had ice on the ground. I hit the four wheel drive this weekend it wouldn't cut on.. It's electric and I read somewhere it might possibly be the 4x4 modulator?? Idk what I up against.. and I have no idea if that's it..

When you turn the ignition key, do the 4wd lights do a self check? If not then more than likely you module is dead. It is located behind the passenger side kick panel.
If it does do a self check then it could be your 4wd shift motor or the 4wd selector switch.
When I turn the ignition key on.. I'm not getting the 4x4 check flashing.. And, Nothing happens at all when I turn the 4x4 on.. No noise.. I checked the transfer case.. The shift motor looks normal but I guess I can take it off and clean it?? I also checked all the wires near n' around the passenger kick panel (cause I have no idea what my modulator looks like) and there was nothing loose. The 4x4 **** isn't broken either, I took it off and checked it. If that helps anymore.. Thanks for help so far guy's. I'm looking forward to fixing this one.
Might I ask what would be the symptoms if the 4wd had trouble disengaging?
Would that possibly be the shift motor as well?
Are you letting off the gas to let it disengage. I know if I don't i get a lound clunk or it wont come out at all until i get off the gas.

More than likely its the control module if the lights are not doing a self check. It should look like a small box. I have never seen mine. When it went out I still had warranty so I just took it in.

Yes.
I was searching around the forum and found a thread where some moisture got in the x-fer case and the owner experienced similar issues with 4wd not disengaging....I may look into changing that out.
It almost seems like if I take a hard left then the 4wd disengages...but I'm not totally convinced that's the case.
I know for a fact the previous owner had an issue with changing the "other" fluids (coolant, brake, etc) besides the oil so I'm sure the diffs and x-fer case are in need.
FX4BFT02- I don't mean to ***** up your thread.....maybe I shoulda made a new one...hindsight's 20/20...<sigh>

Ok. I forgot I had the same problem. I got water in the case so I just changed the fluid and all was good. The fluid that came out looked like chocolate milk.
its the box if your not geting the lights on start up my friend has a 01 ranger his done the same thing put a new 4x4 box in and it worked again the box is behind the pass side kick panel has 2 plugs going in to it one grey and the other black

is the 4x4 motor fuse blown? if it is and the motor shorted out it could fry the module too, happened to me, the motor is pricy to replace and so is the module, check those and check any other fuse for the switches.
