Fuel filter disconnect trick.

I have seen a lot of posts regarding difficulty in disconnecting the fuel lines from the filter. This weekend I replaced my fuel filter and discovered an easy way to disconnect them. At least it works well on my 02.

If you look at the fitting on the fuel line you should find a tab or long button looking device on one side that is flush with the outer diameter of the fitting. Mine were either orange or green depending on which line it was. I found if I pressed in on this tab/button with my thumb nail, it would easily release the line fitting from the filter. You could use a screw driver also but I found it easier to wrap one hand around the fitting and use my thumb nail to push the tab/button in while holding the filter with the other hand to pull them apart.

I did use a tool to disconnect one of them but was having trouble getting the larger line to disconnect with the tool. I decided to try pushing in on that tab/button and it practically fell apart. I am glad I like to experiment because that job will be a lot easier now.

Pushing in that green and orange with my fingernail is how i do mine.

On '01+ trucks, you dont need any special tooling to disconnect the fuel lines from the filter.

Yup.

It helps to push the line onto the filter more then installing the tool, while you still try and push it onto the filter.

You may need to wiggle the line a bit. It should slide off easily if you have released the lock.

Make sure there is no pressure on the system. It will go everywhere. Being that your face is right there. Its not a good time.

my 2000 had plastic clips you pull out and the filter comes out no special tool needed. Up by the motor there is a spring style fiting that needed a tool though.
